    Lost Lore: Cowlfang's Star

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 05:47 AM PDT

Okay, so this is a follow-up post to my lore research on Ofela Soulcleave and her lost lantern. If you've not seen that post, head there first for some context, but what I just found blew my mind and I hope it blows yours too.

After writing about Ofela Soulcleave yesterday, I realized I hadn't given my best effort to find the lantern in the open world, so I went back to look for it. I was running through all the Charr maps and was starting to get discouraged, but near the end of my excursion I came upon a small town in the Iron Marches, and lo and behold, I found some lanterns.

Red and black, although a slightly different design, I could tell right away that these lanterns I found were special (mostly because I hadn't seen a single one like them in the entirety of the Charr open world up until this point). Lots of white lanterns, lots of flame ones, some orange ones back in the Black Citadel, but none like this.

The two red lanterns hung on adjacent buildings, both in the town of Cowlfang's Star, and that's when I realized I had found the name of Ofela's weapon: Cowlfang's Star. However, when trying to uncover what exactly that meant, I was stumped. None of the NPCs in the area were any help, and the surroundings were sadly devoid of clues. There were even two extra lanterns just outside the town near Almorra's biggest fan, but my brain was hurting too much to try and decipher what those meant.

    Luckily, I didn't give up.

I searched for characters with that specific name: nothing. I tried to find Charr warbands named either cowl or fang: still nothing noteworthy. But then I thought about what the name itself means literally, and that's when I figured it out.

We know very little about the human gods, but we do know what they might look like. Grenth, the human god of death, has been depicted in a variety of ways, but the thing that stands out most is that he always appears to be wearing a hood; or what some might consider a cowl. And from this cowl we typically see some form of horns or fangs protruding.

Therefore I believe, with very little doubt now, that the human relic Ofela wielded was in fact Grenth's own lantern. The Charr didn't owe their victory over the Flame Legion to some knockoff human relic, no, but to the magical weapon of the death god himself!

Who exactly wielded it throughout the ages remains unclear, as well as the precise means by which Ofela Soulcleave acquired it, but I couldn't be more pleased with how deep this rabbit hole went and I'm so glad I powered through.

    Bravo Arenanet, honestly, wow.

The next time you're playing renegade and you call on Ofela Soulcleave to join the fray, you can rest easy knowing the god of death has your back; and smile because you're channeling one of the most elaborate easter eggs of all time.

Is the community biased? Afk farming vs alt accounts

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 04:50 AM PDT

As the title suggests, there is a steady stream of posts calling attention to the afk farming problem. Going as far as parts of this sub readily admitting that they want to witchhunt these individuals and criticising the mods for censoring names and such.
I was really interested in some of these arguments, as very similar things can be said about alt accounts and spamming login rewards. Yet there was a post recently where the majority actively defended the alt account culture.

Let's look at the facts we have:

    Afk farming Alt accounts
Is there a benefit gained? Yes, Volatile Magic, Materials etc. Yes, Mystic Coins, Laurel conversions.
Does it require any effort? No, you are afk. No, you can have a program do it within minutes.
Is it against Tos? kinda, not gonna open this discussion again. kinda, only if you multibox in the wrong way.
Does it effect the economy? Yes, reduces prices of mats to a degree. Yes, hella dumps mystic coins into the economy. Some people make more money from login rewards than from playing the game.
Is it using any non intended mechanics? No, you can afk farm with just minions and autowalk which are ingame features. No, it's literally login rewards.
Does it cost you anything? No, you only need a necro and time. Yes, you gotta buy alts.

Now I am not making any point about botting, botting is shit and clearly breaks tos as a third party tool. Neither am I saying that alt accounts should be forbidden, I am simply asking why nobody is bothered by them as a farming method.

I will not go over wether or not alt accounts are pay2win, because you can literally convert money to gold anyway, alts are just a long term investment in that matter.

Please just consider what I have to ask:
Why do people argument, that afk farming undermines players efforts to farm gold or materials, alt accounts have the same impact on the economy, they provide materials in return for close to no effort.

My conclusion would be, it's the materials you get. People accept mystic coin prices dropping, because the majority buys MC's and doesn't try to sell them. But other materials people actually try to sell, rather than buy. So I do think the community is actually biased, afk farming and login reward farms have very similar impact on the economy just for different items, and neither requires actual effort.
But I'm interested to hear what others think, why is afk farming witch hunted so much and alt account rewards overlooked or even defended.

Infusion person following our commander around in WvW

This highly visible person has been following our commander around in WvW. They do not fight, they stay in tonic form(see pictures), and are a free kill/rallybot for the opposing teams.

This is starting to cause some slight irritation to our eyes. We have been trying to get them killed somehow before engaging another group, but they just respawn and run back.

Luckily, there is only one of them, for now...

Gw2 started freezing and crashing in busy metas recently

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 12:35 AM PDT

As title says, it only started last week.

No addons, no dx11, no idea what's causing it.

Anyone with the same issue(s) or that knows a fix? I already tried repairing the client.

    EDIT:

I've been able to "fix" it by turning the graphics to minimum (just best performance preset) - it doesnt crash anymore, so it's probably playermodel or effects related

A week or so ago i could do all this stuff with graphics on max without much issue, and nothing changed on my pc (that i know of), not even a windows update. Still weird.

    EDIT 2: pc specs:

windows 10, AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor 3.59 GHz, 15,9gb ram, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 - some parts are getting pretty old but still more than capable of running gw2..

And everything sounds so much fun!

Why isn't there a system that allows you to save the appearances you make with armor and dyes through the wardrobe? It hinders creativity, customization and desire for collecting which are extremely important to a casual player like myself.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 09:14 AM PDT

Hi guys, it's been about 8 years since I played this game. I wasn't expecting to get drawn in, but I did when I was opening up 8 years worth of Birthday Gifts across 5 characters. It was fun, and I ended up with a lot of dyes and other cool things to collect. I even bought an appearance change for my character because I didn't like how I made them look 8 years ago and I'll be honest - they look better than characters I could make in other popular MMOs. So, I was excited to start making cool appearance sets for my characters, as that's what I normally find myself doing in other MMOs. I like collecting stuff and playing dress-up with my characters.

The problem I ran into is that, there isn't really an appearance save system? There's equipment slot system but it seems to be for changing equipment sets, not for appearances.

I'm kind of baffled because the game has incredible looking armor and a beautiful, extensive dye system - yet there's no way to play around and make appearance sets? Why is that. I hate bringing up 'other' MMOs, but from all the ones I've tried, they normally have some kind of decent appearance saving system. WoW has transmog, FFXIV has Glamour. They both do a fine job at letting you create cool looks and saving them to switch to in the future. I thought for sure this game would as-well.

I think people have workarounds, like carrying around extra armor to save appearances (Sorry, but that's the last thing I'd ever want to do in a video-game).

I genuinely feel like if this game had a way of saving your appearances in a similar way to the previous games I mentioned, it would make it more appealing in general. I'm fine with all the store items. I'm fine that there's loot-boxes, but not having a way to make appearance sets is detrimental to what I enjoy most in MMOs - customization and collection.

Should I play this game if im done playing World of Warcraft? What to expect from this game? Are there many differences?

To be honest I just located this game and weirdly never heard of it before. How is the state of this game? Are there still enough players online every day? It seems like it has interesting lore and gameplay.

Thank you, and I hope to see you there!

Is there any communication of ANet about the 10k gold-limit on the TP?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 06:57 AM PDT

some items being worth more than 10k gold has created a "shadow-market" where people trade outside of the TP which I don't think is in ANets interest - I mean people would still do that to an extend because of the TP-Fees but at least you wouldn't push every single person that got such a lucky infusion-drop into those shadow-markets.

Wouldn't it be healthy for the economy to not have this limit anymore?

    Introductions from the pet classes

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:50 PM PDT

Engineer: Here's my 20 foot tall mech with incredibly high damaging, ranged attacks that shares my stats with a whole new pet interface that rangers have been begging for for years and has abilities to support me as well!

Necromancer: Well we have some pets I guess. Not sure why our GW1 pets were more detailed and more cool. But hey, surely we're gonna get a pet elite spec for Cantha with the original huge flesh golem that everyone loved, which was from Cantha, right? ...Right?

Ranger, the dedicated pet class: Here's my floating dried cabbage. The majority of our pets have game-breaking bugs, the AI is horrible. Sometimes my pet can run in a straight line to the enemy, and it decides when to use attacks.
