Why do YOU still play Guild Wars?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 11:51 AM PDT

TLDR: Genuinely wondering what different folks have as the reason why they still play Guild Wars? I do not ask this question as a means to provocate an argument, rather to learn about the variety of reasons why folks continue to make this their home mmo (if they do).

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A bit of history about myself with the game and MMOs in general, and a rationale for my question:

I played GW1 from 2006-2008 as my main MMO after becoming frustrated with FFXI's very demanding end game. After GW1 I jumped around almost every MMO on the market released between 2007-2011 (Aion, 2 Moons, Cabal Online, Granado Espada, World of Warcraft, LoTR, D&D Online, City of Heroes / Villains, DC Universe Online, Pirates of The Burning Sea, Perfect World, Atlantica Online, and countless others) but never committed to any of those longer than a month, and never really found a game I could commit to until Guild Wars 2 and FFXIV:ARR released.

I ended up coming back to GW1 for about 6 months prior to GW2s launch, and then jumped ship and have been jumping between GW2 and FFXIV as my main mmos pretty consistently over the past 6 or so years. I am one of the folks who genuinely enjoys the gameplay and story of GW2 most out of any MMO I have played (maybe FFXIV is a close 2nd).

With that said, out of curiosity, I came back to GW1 a few weeks ago, just to mess around and play for a few days. To my surprise, the game was PACKED with people (and still is). I joined a guild, messed around a bit, and began to wonder "What are the reasons people stay in GW1, despite the fact the game hasn't really received any substantial content update in years now?"

When I go back to check out FFXI, I can rationalize why people play it. Sure, its not the game it used to be, but they are still updating it with content regularly. The same could be said for other old games I used to play like Lord of the Rings online.

I've asked friends who play FFXI why they still play, and a surprising number (about 4/13) of them play because their computer can't really run anything more modern, which I never considered as a possible reason, but it makes sense!

I tried asking in game several times (world chat in Kamadan and alliance chat), but for some reason the conversation always devolves into people arguing about GW2 and GW1. There seems to be a lot of anger towards GW2, and any conversation that begins with prefacing my position as "former" GW1 player, but current "GW2" player appears to immediately engender vitriolic condemnation and a delegitimization of my inquiry.

I am genuinely not trying to start that argument here, I just want to know why YOU still enjoy GW1, what motivates you to play GW1, and I am also very curious if GW1 players look at the game as their "home" MMO today, or if it has become your backup game, and if so, what other MMOs are you currently enjoying?

Hope we can have a nice conversation about this topic.

Run-a-thon Fundraiser for Night of 10,000 Ectos 2020

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:57 PM PDT

    Hello all!

Tonight and tomorrow night I, and a few other runners, will be hosting a run-a-thon in order to raise more money for the event. If you need missions rushed, zones vq'ed, or a run around the entire Tyria continent for each outpost, that is all possible. These runs will all be offered for donations (aka tips) for Night of 10,000 Ectos: 2020. PM me in game on 'Wtb A' or 'Callme Monk X' and I will get you in contact with a runner.

If you would like to assist and help run other people please let me know. We are looking for trustworthy people who can offer this help to the community and pass on the donation that you receive.

Info on Night of 10,000 Ectos - 2020

One of the main reasons this is happening so close to the event is that the scavenger hunt reaaaaly took off this year. Normally we would max out at around 10 entries. This year we are over 50 winners (55 right now). This means that I am currently out of money for the main event. I still have other mats, consumables, pcons, minis, el tonics and stuff like that, but the main "oomf" of the prizes are now tied up in the scavenger hunt. I still plan on hosting the event and giving away lots of fun and cool stuff, but the more we can raise before the event, the better the party will be!

If you don't need a run but would like to donate, that is great too!
