Arenanet leaked the name of The Deep Sea Dragon today during the Extra Life stream

During today's Extra Life stream, Arenanet made some clever hints about what's the Deep Sea Dragon's name. The Dragon is called Sourdough!

During the stream we saw two main hints:

    1. During the Colin Johanson's stream participation, a guy came trough giving bread. The bread had the sign Sourdough. We know for a fact that the Deep Sea Dragon's name starts with the letter S.
    2. During the Cal Cohen's stream participation, they showed the famous GW2 toaster from way way back during the years...if you don't believe me, just google "gw2 toaster". We see the hand dipping the bread, with a dragon on it, in the water. In the stream they said that the water is not normal, so it must be a salt water.

With all the facts above I think the story behind the toaster and the Deep Sea Dragon is clear.

Arenanet came with the idea to name the Deep Sea Dragon - Sourdough. After they named it that way, I guess they googled the name and they saw that the name is a type of bread.

Their next move was to meme the name by making a toaster and keep the name secret.

    BONUS:

They've shown us that the toast has been eaten by something, meaning the DSD's magic is being eaten by someone, probably the girl from the EOD trailer (hence the female quaggan), and we are going to help the dragon return its magic back.

PSA: Mini Mr. Sparkles is available for as little as 75 gems right now!

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 06:46 PM PDT

Thanks to us reaching the total goal for Extra Life for those that donated this is an extra bonus.

So all you have to do is purchase any of the extra life items in the store, which counts as an extra life donation and then go to lions arch for free Mini Mr. Sparkles.

Cheapest way is 75 gems or about 22g right now and purchasing an extra life karma booster.

EDIT The mini is a reward FOR DONATING. Buying any of the extra life items gets you the mini because we reached the goal required. The extra life karma booster is just the cheapest so if you don't want to spend 800 gems you can spend 75 gems.

    Hopefully that explains it better.

Suggestion: Use the Ranger’s pet management system (K) to customize the Jade mech (purely cosmetics)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 11:33 PM PDT

Since the Mechanist uses the same UI for the Profession mechanic of ranger(specifically untamed), it would be plausible if we can repurpose the pet managament system to help personalised our jade mech.

The pet management system has 4 boxes to choose our pet as a ranger(2 land pet and 2 water pet), what if we replace those with, say, Head-Body-Color 1-Color 2 (not the jade parts because those are unique), we can easily change how our mech looks without the devs making a separate system. Then we can either go around cantha to find the parts or buy them from the vendor with maybe some special items from fishing. They dont have to have stats. Cosmetics is enough.

Just a suggestion to think about.

Do you have a 'secret' corner of a map that you find surprisingly relaxing/comforting?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 06:02 AM PST

For me it's the cave in between Melandru's Refuge and Lakeside Bazaar in Lake Doric. Lake Doric is such a harsh place (I hate the map) but the cave gives me some sort of solace in the midst of the chaos. If I were an NPC, I would like to spend my retirement days in the cave, helping new travelers with getting unreachable Unbound Magic with my dear Griffon. Do you have any such comforting place in other maps?

EoD Elite Speculation 11: Untamed Proposed Changes

New music revealed during Extra Life livestream - The first live track for End of Dragons that is hinted to be the Shing Jea Island's theme, and also the Mechanist's theme that is also related to the Jade Sea

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 02:10 PM PDT

Few months ago, when Arenanet revealed the expansion, few tracks played before the event. One of them is what I presume is Shing Jea Island's theme, based on the description of the map by Nick Hernandez - the map that feels peaceful, spiritual, but also hiding mysteries. Also the screenshot that was showcased while the track played shows a piece of Shing Jea Island.

Today we could hear the first live recorded track that will play in the expansion

The second track is the Mechanist's theme, but the art that was showcased while the music played shows most likely the Jade Sea it's Echovald.

I think Mechanists and Jade Sea are strongly related, because of this specialization's theme which is utilizing the Jade tech. :)

of course it could be that the art showed while the music was playing was randomized. :D

    Music nerd signs off :)

    Help with choosing prefix

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 07:11 AM PST

I'm probably just asking the wrong question on google, but can't find anwser.
For hallowen event I chose lunatic templar armor and chose it's stats (prefix). But now I would like to choose another one. Can I reset this item (it's prefix)? Do I need to do the mythic forge recepi to change it into specific enchantment, or is there another way that I can choose stats again?

The Weekly Map Recap, Week 42 - The Desolation

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 12:21 PM PDT

Welcome to the Weekly Map Recap, a series where we look back at one map in the game each week. We'll look with a critical eye at how each map represents its theme, proves faithful to its lore, and implements its design. We'll see how effective its gameplay is, whether the art holds up, and the forecast for the map's long term retention. With 52 maps to date, it'll be quite the journey!

Links to the previous entries in a reply at the bottom!

    42 of 52 - The Desolation - Level 80

I think it's safe to say that The Desolation is a fairly controversial map. In the map survey that we did, it had the fewest fans of any Path of Fire map. It's not too hard to see why, either: it's covered in enemies, it doesn't have a strong map-wide meta event, and the environment is fairly doom and gloom with little reward for braving it. That all said, I think there are at least a couple redeeming features that we shouldn't overlook.

    Theme/Concept - 4/10

For all the content that it has, Desolation's theme is a bit confused. It's unclear whether it has one unifying concept other than 'survive the Desolation.' There's definitely elements of throughlines like 'the unjust reign of Joko' in the north, and the 'desperate fight against Balthazar' in the Maw and Junundu events. But then you have elements that don't fit into any of those stories, like the ghosts which predominate over large sections in the west or east, or the legacy of the Maw of Torment and the djinn in the Jackal Run area. Perhaps there's a unifying theme of 'history' in the sense that everything revolves around the dying, the dead, or the ancient past? Joko's Bone Palace is built of history, the ghosts and djinn are both dealing with the past, and the Junundu and Maw of Torment metas both recall key elements of the first game. But if that's the case, there doesn't seem to be much cohesion here - especially with the lack of a unifying meta event.

    Lore - 9/10

If the theme is connected to the past, then the lore definitely backs that up. This map is covered in lots of fantastic elements, from meetings with sunspear ghosts to the connection between the jackals and the Margonites. Perhaps some of the best lore is finally getting to see what's up with the Order of Shadows, and how/why they split from the Order of Whispers; given that the original Movement of the World had always portrayed the Whispers as having maintained connections to Elona, it was a bit jarring to find that that wasn't the case. But the explanation is done fairly well here, with a clear focus on the Shadow's part on the political realities of a conquered Elona.

Getting to chat with key characters from the first game is neat, too: Dunkoro is always a favorite. We get to meet lots of new characters that are significant as well, from the vizier of Joko to the descendant of Koss, who more than lives up to his namesake. Throw in some Forgotten lore and some tucked away dungeons (the horror of Joko's harem is well handled), and you've got a map stuffed to the brim with cool lore bits to find.

    Design - 4/10

Here's where things get a bit touchier, though. Desolation feels like it wants to be a meta map, with a clear push southwards to confront Balthazar at the Maw of Torment and Joko at his Bone Palace. It's not difficult to imagine a map where we are a third party fighting a push-pull battle against Balthazar's forces in the southwest, and Joko's in the southeast - with consequences if we push one side too far without pushing the other.

But we don't get that, and it's hard not to feel that the renewed focus on 'vanilla-style explorable maps' is the cause. With the core structure relying on hearts as anchored event areas which cannot move or shift, we can't see any Dragon's Stand or Dragonfall-style structure here.

On top of that, this map is big. It's the largest in the game by horizontal area, and so there's vast distances between the heart areas. Paired with a relatively low population of players to push events, the map can feel a bit more like a wasteland than I think it intends.

    Gameplay - 3/10

What's especially odd is that the map has the density of enemies that we would expect from such a map, with strong levels of challenge brought on the player's ability to move around with traps and packs of foes. So even though the map is nominally an explorable one, the density of mobs doesn't strongly encourage exploration, especially when paired with a lack of clear reward structure that motivates those on Heart of Thorns maps to persevere through the more difficult enemies.

Again, this is combined with large spaces between heart areas. So what we arrive at is a map filled with enemies, with a couple outposts of safety, but very little motivating players to brave them.

The main metas here, the Maw of Torment and the Junundu Rising events, are both mid-complexity events. They're not as challenging as Serpent's Ire, but more involved than Forged in Fire or Piñata. Because Path of Fire rewards are generally undertuned, and because the map itself is generally considered a pain to get around in, these metas are generally not run. It's a shame too, since I have found that both event chains are pretty enjoyable, just with poor rewards.

    Art - 8/10

There's a great deal of fantastic art on this map, and the artists have done a strong job of varying the different environments - although it may not feel like it at first glance. But the differences between the watery northern section of the map, the sulphur mines, the Maw of Torment, the Jackal Run, the Bone Palace - all of these areas are visually distinct. The problem is that most players only have an impression of running through this map briefly and then avoiding it, where the main routes stretch through the same-y middle section of the map with the sulphur canyons. Consequently, most folks only think of that central area when they think of the visuals here, and it's true that the overall impression of the map is… well, desolate.

Again, that's not to say that it's not gorgeous: in fact, one of my favorite first impressions of a map has been running up the first incline from the northern village, with the beautiful blossoms on the trees and the golden domed building at the top of the cliff. Or turning and seeing the Bone Palace for the first time, or standing in the floating city in Jackal Run.

Overall, it's a hard map to judge, art-wise. It does a really solid job at accomplishing the mood and tone it sets out to create, and so it feels wrong to give it lower marks for doing just that. Should we automatically rate maps higher for not being 'pretty' like Grothmar or parts of Auric Basin? I'm not sure that's appropriate.

    Long Term/Retention - 3/10

Man, this one really suffers. Desolation has undoubtedly the lowest retention of any of the Path of Fire maps, with most bounty trains running on other maps, with few folks willing to run the two metas, and with only the regular hero trains to sustain it.

Like with the other Path of Fire maps we've discussed, the core problem here is that there's no reason to run on Desolation if you're going for PoF rewards. All the worthwhile rewards from this expansion are map-agnostic, since those that you can't purchase off the trading post can be acquired through map currencies which are shared across all of the Crystal Desert areas. So why would you bother with Desolation if it's more convenient or enjoyable to run Crystal Oasis or Vabbi?

    Overall - 5/10

The Desolation frustrates me. It's a zone with some fantastic ideas at play - the djinn jackal sanctuary is memorable, Joko's Bone Palace is executed well, and the junundu are here in spades - and part of a meta event, as they should be. But this is the largest map in the game in one of the areas that we most associate with 'end game' content (from the Realm of Torment). It seems a real shame that there is no world boss, and that the meta event which is here is so poor.

This is another map that feels like it wants to have a HoT back-and-forth map-wide meta. The Order of Shadows vs. Palawa's forces (maybe with some help from the djinn?) pushing back and forth up to the Bone Palace and the Realm of Torment. But because of the structure that is implicit with the renown hearts, it doesn't have that flexibility.

In terms of other elements, too, this map is clearly intended to be a 'big boss' map. Similar to, say, Dragon's Stand or Cursed Shore, there are large numbers of enemies and little reprieve. This makes traversing around the map difficult.

    -------------------

That's all, folks! What do you think of today's map? Any fond memories, or strong complaints? How well do you think Path of Fire stands up in comparison to the other content chunks? Next week, we'll be finishing up Path of Fire with Domain of Vabbi.
