    Perfection

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 05:24 AM PDT

A very small triumph - but important to me

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 03:31 AM PDT

Wanted to tell a story of my little personal triumph. I think, for "real" players it's trivial and maybe laughable but for me it's not, and it is worth sharing.

A bit of perspective. I first met the world of GW somewhere during Nightfall, and had a lot of fun playing it and Eye of the North. So when GW2 was released, I immediately plunged headfirst into it. Now I vaguely remember playing a mesmer with a scepter - predictably not to a great success. Then real life took its toll and I stopped playing.

After a while I came back. This time I built a thief and managed to finish Personal story. Then I was at a loss - new story content was not released at the moment, pvp wasn't quite my cup of tea, and trying to solo any other content resulted in me being killed by literally everything. No, really, I couldn't kill the very first enemy in Ascalonian catacombs. Ever.

Short aside on soloing stuff. It so happens that I generally prefer to play solo. Not because I am a misantropic loner, but I just value (and sometimes actually need) to be able to quit game session without letting anyone down. So while I love joining metas or pve runs of any kind, organised group content does not quite appeal to me.

Back to the story - playing felt frustrating and lacking goals, so I quit again. But then Heart of Thorns was released, and I predictably came back. This time I did some research, learned that necro was good for solo play, so I used the 80lvl boost to get myself a playable necro and tried the expansion. It didn't go well. I grinded Silverwastes endlessly (that was fun and easy enough) but was stuck in the story content. Fair concession: I was not a good player by a mile. Anyway, after a short while I turned from the game once more. The only useful things which lingered were some collected crafting components and my necro leveled to Tailor 500.

Back to the present. This August I by chance heard of the upcoming EoD release. I skipped PoF back in its time, but now I was captured by virtuoso, so I thought - why not give it another try. I logged back in and created a new character: mesmer. Circle is closing, how very fitting.

But this time I took it slowly and seriously. I browsed forums and metabattle, joined this subreddit, and delved into wiki. Chose a build - power greatsword core mesmer (chrono was not attractive for some reason). Finished Personal story. Leveled to 80. Began crafting some gear. Then I bought PoF (huge thanks to this sub for sharing the Prime discount!), read about condi mirage. Got myself a mount. Dashed all over PoF maps for hero challenges. Began working on ascended gear. Grinded LW maps for trinkets.

Where I am now? Last week I finished my ascended armor set (all Yassith's with Tormenting runes) and my ascended trinkets (3 viper's, 3 trailblazer's - I'm still not a great player and prefer some added survivability in OW). Three days ago I soloed my first champion bounty in Elon Riverlands. Two days ago I soloed my first fractal. Yesterday I was playing through HoT enjoying the story without the frustration of dying to every mordrem on the map.

For the first time ever I feel on equal ground with the game. I still have a lot of space for improvement - I still need to get properly statted ascended weapons instead of misstatted exotic ones, and, most importantly, I need to upgrade my mastery of combat. I see a lot of things to do - finish HoT, finish LW, play IS, jump into more fractals, do dungeons, you name it. Maybe began a journey to a Legendary?

But now I feel confidence in playing the game. No need to hide from every veteran. No need to skip content. I can explore. I can enjoy the world. And it gives me so much fun!

Thanks for reading this endless stream of conciousness :)

We know the GW2 marketing has had its fair share of criticism. If you could give the ANET marketing team one tip to help boost the game's image/perspective to outside players, what would it be?

Please try to keep it to constructive criticism

I don’t know anything about guild wars 2 - should I play it?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 08:18 PM PDT

I'm looking for an MMO with an active community. I wanted to play WoW but it feels so dead.

Is guild wars 2 a lot similar to WoW? Are the servers active still ? Would love some background info for a noob.

    What are your keybinds?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 07:07 AM PDT

Lets see those weird key combos! I use the numbers for skills 1-4 and R for heals z x c v for utilities and elite because I find it faster to just move my fingers downwards for utils and have two side buttons on mouse for action camera and to quickly rotate 180ª

In an alternate reality where Icebrood Saga was a full expansion...

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 12:02 PM PDT

Imagine the elite specializations we could have gotten. Here are some I was just toying around with:

    The Nomad

    • Warrior elite specialization
    • New weapon: Staff
    • New utility skill type: Elixirs
    • Traits and skills would focus on easy access to CC and boons so warrior can tank like chrono (blocks, invulns, easy access to vigor, etc.)
    • Adrenaline would become Mushroom Fury, which would act like Necro Shroud and instead of a Burst Skill, the Nomad gets access to a Mushroom Rage transform
    • Themed around Charr gladium or renegades, like Nicabar Steelweaver (yeah, I know he wears light armor in Forging Steel -- I like how much he loves mushrooms, ok?)

    The Flameshielder

    • Guardian elite specialization
    • New weapon: Warhorn
    • New utility skill type: Glyphs
    • Traits and skills would focus on tanking via lots of self-sustain and group Aura share -- could pick between Fire Aura or Frost Aura, Light Aura or Dark Aura, and Magnetic Aura or Shocking Aura depending on trait picks
    • Virtues become Aura of Justice, Aura of Resolve, Aura of Courage (with associated traits affecting what kind of aura the new virtue Auras generate)
    • Themed around the traditional Paladin like core Guardian but with a charr Flame Legion twist (thanks Efram Greetsglory for sharing the magic)

    The Brawler

    • Revenant elite specialization
    • New weapon: Main hand Axe
    • New skill type: Legendary Olaf Olafson
    • Traits and skills would focus on Power DPS with lots of self-Might generation and self-Vigor generation for plenty of dodges
    • Access to Boast profession mechanic, which would apply Taunt in AOE on enemies and apply Alemoot's Courage effect on allies, buffing their defenses (increased healing power, damage reduction, etc., like how Kalla's Fervor buffs offensive abilities)
    • Themed around the Norn Fighting Tournament and my favorite archetypical Norn from GW1

    The Shaman

    • Elementalist elite specialization
    • New weapon: Longbow
    • New utility skill type: Spirits
    • Traits and skills would focus on support role, and give elementalists access to group Alacrity generation, along with a few other boons
    • Attunements would become Spiritual Attunements (Spirit of Fire, Spirit of Water, Spirit of Earth, Spirit of Air)
    • Themed around the kodan and how they view the spirits

    The Apostate

    • Necromancer elite specialization
    • New weapon: Sword
    • New utility skill type: Mantras
    • Traits and skills would focus on DPS role, and give necromancers access to group Quickness generation, along with a few other boons
    • Shroud would become Demonic Shroud, and gain abilities flavored similarly to the Voice from Deepstone Fractal
    • Themed around the Nightmare creatures, i.e. demons, and the Voice from the Deepstone Fractal

    The Bard

    • Mesmer elite specialization
    • New weapon type: Shortbow
    • New utility skill type: Cantrips
    • Traits and skills would focus on a healer role, and give mesmers a choice between straight up healing, barrier generation, or a little of both
    • Shatter skills would become Rhythm skills instead, with unique buffs to weapon skills depending on the order the Rhythm skills are played (think like how Weaver dual skill changes on attunement swap)
    • Themed around the norn tradition of telling tales and forging their legends (also we finally get our Minstrel class :P )

    The Saboteur

    • Thief elite specialization
    • New weapon type: Torch
    • New utility skill type: Traps
    • Traits and skills would focus on a condi DPS role, as well as give thieves access to group Quickness generation
    • Steal would become Sabotage, and instead of giving the thief a Stolen Skill, it would apply a timed effect on the target before "detonating" and applying Bleed, Burn, and Poison
    • Themed around the Ebon Vanguard from Guild Wars 1

    The Trailblazer

    • Ranger elite specialization
    • New weapon type: Rifle
    • New utility skill type: Meditations
    • Traits and skills would focus on a ranged DPS role, with enhanced pets
    • Ranger pets would benefit from the Evolved Pet mechanic, making the Trailblazer's pet an Elder version with better stats and improved pet skills
    • Themed around Priory explorers and being self-reliant in the wilderness with only your pet to rely on (like core ranger but with gun)

    The Mastermind

    • Engineer elite specialization
    • New weapon type: Daggers (main hand/off hand)
    • New utility skill type: Deceptions
    • Traits and skills would focus on DPS, but with a heavy dose of misdirection and trickery, like a mesmer but without magic
    • The elite tool belt skill would be replaced with Complex Schemes, a new profession mechanic that generates clones based on the number of tool belt skills used within a certain amount of time
    • Themed around Order of Whispers and Ash Legion, AKA spies and commandos, using misdirection and distraction rather than stealth to infiltrate

Anyway, obviously, these are just for fun. Still a bummer we never got the full expansion treatment with IBS, but hey, all ahead full for Cantha. 'Ere we go, 'ere we go, 'ere we go!

Starting Guild Wars 2 and playing solo?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 12:22 PM PDT

I played Classic WoW for a while and eventually it burned me out. I lost track of time and friends in-game because I started so late, and it felt very alienating. Guild Wars 2 seems a lot more focused, or perhaps ... allowable/able?? to grant a good single player experience. For instance I LOVE the idea of some of these Chase Items (Legendary Weapons).

But I have some other questions. I'm a PvE player at Heart, but I like when the PVE is molded into other aspects. Like World vs World.

What is a decent server for a mostly solo WvW'er? Seems like the balance is a pop that is not too big where you get zerged constantly, but not barren either. Any advice? This is probably going to be the biggest choice since I need to pick it first.

Are most classes viable in endgame content?

Is there a dungeon endgame where you can play a role? I know GW2 doesn't have the trinity of heals, tank, dps - but it still seems like they matter? Is there a dungeon finder or tool to help a solo player group for that content?

Finally, what's the story like? It's episodic I've heard like seasonal?

Can f2p accounts make beta characters?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 11:24 PM PDT

Im trying to convince some of my frends to give GW2 a chance. Unfortunatly erly pve dons't giwe a best example of what game has to offer.

Upcoming elite spec beta would be a good oportunity for me to show GW2 to my frends for what it is as long as they will be able to make beta characters.

Does anyone here tried or have info about weither or not f2p accounts can participate in beta and create beta characters?

What are the differences between the personal stories?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 05:54 PM PDT

Hey, newbie here! I started playing two days ago as a Sylvari ranger with my brother (Sylvari thief) and it's been great. However, I noticed that we both have different personal stories. I'm playing the white stag story and he's playing the green knight story. I have a few questions about the personal stories.

(Please don't spoil too much on the plot)

Do the race personal stories eventually merge together into the same one? (As in, the three Sylvari personal stories for example)

How much am I missing out plot-wise if I don't play the other personal stories?

What are your guy's favorite personal stories?

    Thank you in advance!

There are no great lore friendly armor combinations for light Asura - Change my Mind!

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 07:50 AM PDT

I love the Fashion options and sometimes i just spen a whole day to design my character. After a long time i jumped to play my Mesmer and started to enjoy the class, but i hate the wardrobe options for light armor asura. I cant get a great Outfit together thats looks lore friendly and doesnt look like an creature out of unicorm anime. Also i never saw a great combination on other characters ingame. Long time i just ran with cultural armor bc it fits the best, but on the other side they are quite boring. So change my mind.

I m the only one who is laggin hard since 3 weeks ? (Belgium)

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 05:55 AM PDT

It's been 2-3 weeks that I have lag in a totally random way: sometimes everything is fine and then I change the map and it becomes unplayable with lag of 5 to 10 seconds. My connection is good as usual but on GW2 nothing is going well.

Am I the only one in this situation? I play from Belgium.
