We've been promised the game continuing after EoD, but what about engine/performance upgrades?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 09:01 PM PDT

Pretty much as the title says.

We have been promised that the End of Dragons expansion is not the end of Guild Wars 2, and that they've still got lots of stories to tell, but, as we know, with each expansion, the performance of the game suffers.

What is the point in having all this new content if the performance will be horrible?

How many times have we gotten the excuse "the engine is too old to do this", or "it's spaghetti code and it would take too much time/money to fix it".

Them not upgrading the engine (or at least not telling us that is something they're considering for the future) leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

I apologize for the rather negative view, but I truly love the game and while new content is always amazing (especially the expansion with new elite specs), the fact that the game performance will suffer yet again it's making me question whether or not they believe in the future of Guild Wars 2.

PvE balance patches constantly ignoring underused skills is disappointing

    Posted: 02 May 2021 12:33 PM PDT

There's a concerning trend with pretty much every balance patch that has come out in the last few years, or longer. And it is that changes tend to only be made to abilities that already see high usage. Anything else that isn't already in the PvE meta, especially core profession skills, are completely ignored. So over the course of this game's life, the number of skills people actively use has shrunk. Because whenever an ability is outclassed by another, it stops getting balance updates.

Other games thrive on previously-ignored skills suddenly being made viable. It gets people theorycrafting. Other games like Path of Exile, ESO and FFXIV get loads of mileage out of balance patches. GW2 gets virtually none, because balance patches never actually change how anyone plays the game. They just wind up playing the same meta build with slightly different effectiveness because everything else has fallen off the radar and continues to stay off the radar.

The upcoming balance patch notes said they took a look at the state of play across the entire game, yet this pattern continues. We still see:

    • Core spec elite skills being almost completely ignored.

    • Necromancer minions being ignored (obviously a huge part of the class's identity, yet not used often in PvE and so never reworked).

    • Engineer turrets being ignored (same deal as above, despite renegade skills working exactly the same way and being given balance attention).

    • Elementalist cantrips being ignored.

    • Elixirs and Alchemy are a skill type and specialization that are unambiguously 100% centered around boon generation and nothing else, yet they're one of the weakest ways to support a team in the whole game even when you sacrifice all damage output and base your entire build around them. It's baffling that the balance team decided to staple quickness onto Scrapper as support instead of rebalancing the profession's actual support abilities. Lack of support options for engineer is a good identified problem, but the solution indicates they're ignoring the core profession and shoehorning fixes into a DPS elite spec where they don't belong.

    • Countless other examples of skills that have received no PvE balance update in 2+ years (scrape the wiki, they're everywhere).

    • Entire core spec traitlines are ignored. This is especially true for core healing and boon support trait lines. As an example, thief and engineer have two core support specializations each, yet are not viable supports in PvE. Warrior has two core support specializations, but their support role is basically just banner bonuses. Something is off here. These professions should all be able to provide competitive boon support, but they're still balanced under GW2 launch standards where dedicated support roles didn't exist. Yes, "boon thief" exists. But it's definitely not dedicated.

    • If you look at the state of healing and support in general, you'll notice that any profession without a support elite spec has substantially weaker core spec support abilities. Their core abilities are simply weaker, giving fewer boons and with less heal scaling. Around HoT, the game entered a different phase where support became a dedicated role. Any profession that did not receive a support elite spec was given no core spec attention, and continues to receive none.

What's the deal here? Are there plans to look at unused skills in PvE and reintroduce them? Or are we only going to see balance patches for elite specs? Core skills and traits make up a huge portion of gameplay, and it's disappointing to constantly see them ignored. The build crafting in this game could be so much more interesting, but the vast majority of class abilities are given no attention.

Following the engineer example above, I would love to re-gear myself as a viable support engineer in PvE, dust off elixirs and figure out a new build that works and is competitive with other supports in high-end encounters. Instead, "support scrapper" is the answer, and the strategy is to just spam gyros that now inexplicably pump out quickness. It plays exactly the same as a DPS scrapper, it just has boons stapled on. This is boring design, and a consequence of trying to make elite specs the answer to everything.

Awhile back, the team stated that they wanted core builds to be competitive choices next to elite specs, and that was the best news in years. But now things have regressed again, unused skills will continue to be unused. Core profession abilities (which are the vast majority of skills and traits) are still virtually exempt from balance patches. Very disappointing, this game could be so much more interesting.

Misconception about the "exposed" change and it's implications on fractal meta.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 08:45 PM PDT

TL;DR: People are not upset about the exposed change itself, but rather it's implications of making Condi Firebrand overpowered in a fractal setting.

Recently there has been a lot of controversy over the upcoming exposed change with many not quite understanding why this change will be a significant detriment to class diversity in fractals. This will mostly be aimed towards a pug scenario as the hardcore community for fractals is very small and what is effective in a pug can be very different to what is strong with coordinated skilled groups.

The Exposed effect that is placed on many boss enemies when their defiance bar is broken has been adjusted. It now increases power damage taken by 30% and condition damage taken by 100%.

    Anet's Intention:

For a long time, condi has been very weak in fractals due to the nature of the phase lengths. Understandably you lose a lot of value from Damage over Time skills (DoTs) if the enemy dies or goes invulnerable. e.g if a skill does 1000 damage each second over 10 seconds and the enemy dies in 5, then half of it is wasted. This makes power inherently favoured in shorter phases and I don't think anyone disagreed that most condi dps builds needed a buff in fractals, but this exposed change also buffs CFB which was already overperforming in a pug setting.

    The Condi Firebrand Problem:

Condi Firebrand is a bit of an anomaly among condi classes in that it is extremely bursty and competes with power classes already in a pug setting. It also has access to great cleave and tons of utility in the form of aegis, quickness, stab, projectile destruction and pulls. Already, stacking CFBs is one of the best ways to clear T4s, and it is also one of the best options for CMs as well if not playing with a high level group. This self-reliability has made it the best pug class and as such, at least in my peers and I's experience, makes up about half the dps players for CMs + T4s pugs. And if you thought that half the players playing one build was oppressive, wait until the patch hits. Condi Firebrand was already one of the best options, now this exposed change (that CFB can take advantage of the most) will make it by far the best option except for speedclear level groups.

"But this change makes condi viable, why is it bad?"

The issue people have is not with the exposed change as a whole, but rather it's disproportionate effect on CFB, a build that was already very strong. Most people were expecting a nerf to CFB not a significant buff to it. If this exposed change had been coupled with a significant nerf to CFB's burst, it would have been a very healthy change, allowing condi classes to be viable, even if still not matching power at a high level.

"Pug groups aren't that picky about dps slots so why does it matter if CFB is strong, I get by fine on my <insert non-meta build here>"

Frankly I don't understand this argument, I don't believe what pug groups will accept is a good metric of balance. If one class is significantly (or even slightly) more powerful than others, more people will play it, and with how common CFB is already, most are predicting a very blue LFG and rightfully so.

"I don't care what is most optimal, I play for fun" and "You aren't being forced to play CFB"

This one stems from people not understanding how others play the game, and it goes both ways I'll be honest. I personally, along with the rest of the hardcore community and many others, find enjoyment in improving my play and achieving the best performance possible. I don't hold any records or anything, but racing for top dps or improving my groups times are why I play this game. If that is not your thing that's completely fine, but if you don't care about what's optimal or overpowered that doesn't mean other's complaints aren't valid.
I'll admit, often many "tryhards" don't understand the "casual" playstyle and there can be some toxicity between the two, but both are valid ways to play the game and just because what is best in slot doesn't matter to you doesn't mean other people shouldn't care about it.

"I do T4s (or lower) and get by just fine with <non-meta comp/classes>"

I'll be honest I can't speak much for goups not doing CMs. The variance of skill in T4 and lower groups is very high and coupled with the lower difficulty, power level of builds will be much less prominent.

    The power meta:

If you've watched any speedruns lately you would have noticed how quickly bosses melt under optimal conditions. Lots of people dislike this as on some fights you see basically 0 mechanics, and even at a pug level many are skipped with decent dps.
Anet has obviously made an attempt to reduce this in their nerf to Power Weaver, Power Soulbeast and Power Banners. While many agree that a general power nerf was warranted they also inexplicably buffed Dragonhunter, so now speedclears will likely be just stacking DHs, which is sad when you compare it to a year ago when the meta was Rainbow Comp, a composition that had 5 different classes. This doesn't affect a large amount of people but I thought I'd put it in the hopes that maybe DH gets nerfed to be in line with the others.

    Conclusion:

In conclusion, while the idea behind buffing condi classes is fair, it has the side effect of way overbuffing CFB, a class that was already overperforming. If CFB was nerfed this patch would be a very healthy one for pug fractals, and a nerf to DH would likely make it very healthy for the hardcore scene as well. As it is now, pugs will look even more blue than at present, and I can see a lot of the already small hardcore fractal scene leaving if record comps are reduced to DH stacking.

Loose Story Threads from the Base Game

    Posted: 02 May 2021 01:52 PM PDT

There's like a loooooooot of things that were teased in the base game that are never resolved, and probably never will be resolved because it's hard with the current design of the game to revisit old areas. So let's just pile them all up in a heap for fun.

Rattling off a few of my own off the top of my head:

    • The Dream of Dreams. We never really get a concrete answer on what it is other than the Pale Tree is the keeper but not the creator of it. Too bad the Pale Tree doesn't do much any more even though she probably knows everything about what's going on in the world.
    • Magdaer, sister sword to Sohothin. We got it, we reforged it, and it's probably just sitting on a shelf somewhere in Eir's house.
    • Wizard's Tower and Isgarren, just floating there, taunting us. If that isn't the setup for a dungeon / raid then I don't know what is.
    • E. Who dat?
    • THE GARGOYLES! Don't just tease that there's a big significance behind their disappearance and then leave us hanging for 9 years!

Ranger Pet Critical Chance is Lower Than Expected P2

    Posted: 02 May 2021 10:50 AM PDT

After my previous post about ranger pets, u/Tulki made me think that the pets might not be receiving enough critical chance from fury. So, for this test the pets had no boons, no spotter, and the only trait lines that were active were either druid or soulbeast. This means that the innate precision of the pet will be the only thing influencing its critical chance.

Since, I did not have any boons on the pet, the time to kill each golem was very long so I just wanted to do testing on one pet. From my last test it is reasonable to assume that the pets with the same critical chance are no different from one another, but I wanted to confirm that. I conducted a chi squared test to see if any of the pets' critical chance I did previously were different from one another (excluding the Juvenile Eagle and Juvenile Jaguar). With my previous data I used the chisq.test function in r to quickly find the p-value. I did receive an error which said that the chisq.test function might not give accurate results, but with a p-value of 0.9996 it confirms the eyeball test that there is insignificant evidence to conclude that the Juvenile Jacaranda's critical chance is NOT equal to the other pets I tested. With this, I only tested the Juvenile Jacaranda. To be completely transparent, this implies that the pets with different precision might be affected differently that the 1524 base precision pets I tested.

I did the same tests as last time as well as the same analysis. Again, the intervals do not enclose the theoretical critical chance. Which implies that the critical chance of pets is lower than it should be. On a side note, for the druid test the jacaranda averaged 5% critical chance which is about 20% critical chance lower than what I found in my previous test I believe that they are being properly affected by fury.

From my findings the pets have about 40% of the critical chance they should for soulbeasts and base rangers and 30% of the critical chance they should for druids. The reason the druid pet is 30% lower and not 40% is because when you use the p-hat value from the base ranger you find the precision of the pet is about 1154.067 and when you take 80% of that value you get 923.2539 which would imply a critical chance of 1.35% but the base critical chance is 5%.

    Data and plot

Tldr: Ranger pets with 1524 precision have about 75% of the precision they are supposed to have resulting in 40% of the critical chance they should.

How long do you think a Sylvari's life span is?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:52 AM PDT

Since we don't know how long a Sylvari can life I was curious what other people thought.

We know that the Sylvari show no sign of aging, so could it be that they don't age at all, or age extremely slowly like elves in d&d who can life for 750 years.

    Curious what you think.

    New Features In EoD

    Posted: 03 May 2021 08:22 AM PDT

What new feature would you guys like to see in the next expansion? I would like a full fledged fishing system. Recently been catching up on other mmos, and have really come to enjoy fishing when implimented properly. Its fun little side game within the game and nice to have some downtime from the action or questing like in warframe and wow.

With Anets track record of taking ideas from other games and blowing them away, like they did with mounts i believe they could do it again with fishing. They could have a variety of species to collect through out each region, quests, rods to create. The fish could then be used as a consumble for crafting as well as sold on the trade post. There could be events/competitions, even possibly add an aquarium to the guild hall like in animal crossing.

Thats what i would like to see, how about you guys?

gathering tools with quickness boon applied mid animation

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:04 AM PDT

I bought the unbound gathering tools because they have the fastest speed on logging and mining. But after playing around with them, I noticed that the unbound logging tool doesn't get sped up by quickness if it is applied mid animation. Is this normal or a bug?

It's bad because you want to press F while mounted, so you can only apply quickness shortly after the animation started.

Edit: maybe my feeling is wrong and it actually gets sped up, but either slower or the cast bar doesn't update. Is it normal for the cast bar to reflect the cast before quickness is applied? Basically, when I don't cast quickness, I can cancel the gather cast at around 90 %. Same for when I cast quickness before gathering. If I cast quickness shortly after gathering started, I can't cancel at 90 %, I actually have to wait a bit after the cast bar finished. Is this just a visual cast bar bug, but the actual animation speed is the same as casting quickness before casting?

It got bugged around the cannon event and stayed bugged for at least 5 hours today. It's probably still bugged. What do you even do then? We tried filling the map to create an overflow map but it didn't work. There's literally nothing except a patch or Anet intervention that will fix this.
