    Steam Glowing Trailer Choice

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:50 AM PDT

Well, we are finally on Steam. We even got a trailer (because someone mentioned there was none at some point ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ ) and for joy or dismay it's the mobile marked orientated glowing weapons trailer. (The one that was never officialy used (?))

While the game did go the glow or go home route over the recent years, I don't know if that is the right one to put on Steam.

Mostly, because the marketing team for the specific episodes was able to create actually awesome and more representative ones.

Which means, I personaly would love them doing a trailer, rather than the cheap render one we got here. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

PS. I just remembered that microsoft offers easy emoji via "windows-key" + "." so, yeah...

Considering the willingness of Anet to bring new players through adds and the recent announcement of an upcoming steam release, I think it's time to fix the PoF & LS4 lags that make those maps pretty much unplayable (Thunderhead peaks i'm looking at you).

thank you for coming to my Tedtalk.

The Weekly Map Recap, Week 24 - Malchor's Leap

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 04:01 PM PDT

Welcome to the Weekly Map Recap, a series where we look back at one map in the game each week. We'll look with a critical eye at how each map represents its theme, proves faithful to its lore, and implements its design. We'll see how effective its gameplay is, whether the art holds up, and the forecast for the map's long term retention. With 52 maps to date, it'll be quite the journey!

Links to the previous entries in a reply at the bottom!

Also, before we get to the recap, you should know that I'm currently conducting a survey on map preference. I'm currently still accepting responses - and I'll be publishing the results in a Weekly Map Recap Special article. Get in those responses while you still can!

    24 of 52 - Malchor's Leap - Level 75-80

This one is pretty odd. In an elevator pitch of the Orrian maps, it's 'the middle one where we visit some farms and old theaters.' Famous for the cross-map 'DWAYNAAAA' voice line - one of a proud group of cross-map audio along with 'CITI-CITIZE-CITIZENS' - Malchor's Leap is most noted in the community for its troves of Orrian lore.

With this map, we are almost finished with the vanilla set. This is our last pre-80 map. It's hard to believe that there are more 80-only maps than there are under-80.

    Theme/Concept - 9/10

Malchor's Leap is about re-enactment. It's about cycles, and circles. It's very meta in that way, given the nature of the game's dynamic event system - playing events on a loop. For the goddess of illusion and theater - the art of reenactment - it is incredibly appropriate.

This map is home to both Lyssa and Dwayna, both the focus of events and areas that involve re-enactment. For Dwayna, it involves the repetition of the tragedy of Malchor, her lover. For Lyssa, it involves moving around the Stations of the Temple of Lyssa - moving around the circle of the temple in a ritual way, and paying respects at various altars.

But the rest of the map is rife with this theme as well. Kitah Manse, once the domain of a powerful mesmer, is home to the reenactment of Orrian noble life through illusion magic. The farmers on this map go about their daily chores endlessly on repeat, tilling dead land. The Altar of Doric was once visited each year by kings of Orr to pay tribute to the great ruler.

Given the association between Orr, the gods, and their monumental architecture, it is hard not to read into the critical importance of the circle to Orrian buildings. The circle is at once whole, singular and something that can be moved around on - i.e; the seasons or time. In a country where magic was part of the fabric of everyday life and the gods walked among mortals, it's hard to imagine the predominance of the circle did not have ritual significance.

Additionally, this map is about survival. If Straits of Devastation is akin to D-Day in Normandy in WWII, then Malchor's Leap is Vietnam or the Boer War - it's a grueling fight to survive in a hostile land. An npc at the start of the map remarks that there are Pact outposts out there, but they're probably already dead.

    Lore - 10/10

Malchor's Leap is in a small club of maps with the strongest lore in Guild Wars 2. While other maps will come close or tie it, none will surpass it. Nearly every location has ritual, religious, or historical significance: some of them on a global Tyrian scale. It is also home to critical lore dumps throughout, as well as the single greatest collection of in-game 'books' in the open world - the Orrian History Scrolls.

Because it would be difficult to do deep dives for each of these locations, we're going to try to touch on as many as possible in an outline format:

    • Dhuum's Last Stand - perhaps the most undervalued key lore location in the game. I'm not sure many people realize that when Dhuum was in charge, resurrection was not possible in Tyria. It is only after Grenth was put in charge that resurrection, and thus the gameplay of GW1 and 2, was made possible (in universe, of course). Imagine the changes in society when it was discovered that resurrection was suddenly possible.
    • The Spark of Ilya - both this and areas named for Lyss are interesting pieces that point to the existence of the dual goddess as separate beings either before or concurrently with a joined existence.
    • Pyrite Penninsula - one of the last unsolved mysteries about Orr. What the hell is this big gold orb? It is powerful enough to feature in a number of legendary weapon crafting journeys. Did it exist before the fall of Orr?
    • Altar of Lies - Even just the name here allow us to piece together an idea of what Orrian society was like. The fact that the 'Altar of Lies' is a major altar in perhaps the most important temple in Orr outside of Arah tells us a great deal.
    • Stations of the Temple - a procession around the Temple is part of the meta event. In our world, Stations (i.e; Stations of the Cross in christian ritual) often involve re-enacting a journey that was taken in the mythological past.
    • The wreck of The Harbinger - the first dead ship defeated by Cobiah Marriner, the founding father of Lion's Arch. Part of the climax of the book 'Sea of Sorrows'.
    • Bayt Fallahin - We can see the re-enactment of Orrian life here - with nobles and peasants working the fields, in a major city where apparently the social classes got along together well.
    • The Village of Wren - where Lyssa literally lived among humans for untold years before the construction of Arah. In fact, the construction of Arah and what life was like before that is a fascinating period in Tyrian and Orrian history. We see the gods as much more human than they are later - Lyssa is living among the humans, Dwayna has a child with a human and that child becomes a god, Grenth.
    • The King's Altar - reflecting the importance of this area before the construction of Arah.
    • Malchor's Anguish - the literal workshop where Malchor worked, where presumably Dwayna herself sat and posed.
    • Bayt Ibadah - implied to potentially be where Doric, the first king of Tyria (!), spoke to Dwayna. Where kings reenacted that moment and paid tribute to Doric. There was a festival held here every year.
    • Scholar Nethry - an npc who talks about the structure of Orrian farms: cooperatives, with multiple families working the land together. Hard to imagine how that interacted with the Orrian system of priestly nobility - especially in a country that we know the average person had strong magical powers. We have stories of children using magic in their games, and street merchants keeping live catches of fish in levitating bubbles of water.
    • The Orrian History Scrolls - located at Shelter Docks, these are perhaps THE single greatest lore dump in the game, to this day. It cannot be understated how much of a bombshell these scrolls provided. Finally, we were getting a glimpse into mysteries about Orr and the Gods that had gone unanswered for almost a decade.
    • Kahloipoi Village has some of the most direct confirmation we have of the Deep Sea Dragon's activities - the quaggan here fled the deeps and ended up in Orr. They are guarded by a largos, who is one of the few cooperative largos in the game. She has more dialogue with the recently added underwater skimmer patch.

It's a big deal. This map, more than either Straits or Cursed Shore, really gives us an insight into a lost civilization. It lets us glimpse a picture of the gods as much more human than we previously assumed. If you're interested in the line between human and god, I've actually written an in-depth exploration of the lore here.

    Design - 6/10

Malchor's Leap's design appears straightforward at first glance: it's a simple right-to-left affair (appropriate for a region with so many arabic names). Players enter from the east, and push meta events towards the west, as the Pact progresses towards Arah.

Things are not quite so simple, though. First, the meta events here are not as connected as they would be in a more recent map: the Temple events can happen regardless of the status of the Pact progress across the map. The Pact movement events are linked together, thankfully - but can stall based on a number of factors. Oddly, the largest event chain - aside from the Lyssa Temple - is the invasion of the underwater Inquest base on the map.

Geographically, as well, this map is more complex than it appears. There are large underground and underwater areas - especially on the southern side and northern side, respectively. The Temple of Lyssa especially is mazelike and enormously vertical for a vanilla map - it could be very difficult to navigate on release. Even more of a challenge is the King's Passage, a labyrinth with a notorious Eye of Zhaitan boss in the southwest that used to wreak havoc on unsuspecting explorers.

Unfortunately, like Straits of Devastation and Cursed Shore, it can be difficult to navigate this map when the landscape all looks so similar. Although the architecture, as we'll get to, is striking it does not create many landmarks.

In total, there are 73 events on map, with a full half of those being events in various meta chains. This may be the map with the most separate chains in the vanilla release, at six. As this is an early map, the rest of the events on this map are quite disconnected. There is never a sense that anything you're doing outside of the metas has any impact on the war effort at large.

    Gameplay - 5/10

Malchor's Leap suffers from many of the same ills that plague Straits of Devastation and the other Orrian maps. Perhaps it is worse than Straits: there is no section that is outside of Orr, and only slightly less underwater content. Many players will look at the quantity of undead (reduced since release) on this map, and turn their nose immediately. There has been a patch to diversify their skillset, but for many players it is still not enough. The addition of Inquest mobs here will likely not ameliorate anybody, since the Inquest mobs are also known to have a bit of an annoying skillset.

Additionally, as one of the Orrian maps, Malchor's Leap was plagued with bugs on release, no pun intended. In fact, despite many passes by the development team that have removed the majority, there are still a couple bugs that remain persistent. While it is not as bad as Cursed Shore was at launch, it is noteworthy.

Additionally, some of these events are quite tough. With reduced population on this map - especially in comparison to Cursed Shore - outside of the Temple events, it can be very difficult to survive solo here. It is a different kind of difficulty to expansion maps, where mobs have diverse and unique skillsets that are dangerous until you develop a strategy for them. Many of these mobs are hp-sponge [Group Event] enemies. Special shoutout to the undead chickens that presage the pocket raptors of Heart of Thorns.

All this said, there are two A+ standout jumping puzzles on this map. Both of them are really distinct, brilliant puzzles - one of which, Scavenger's Chasm, is an entirely different style from almost any other. Here, you collect various keys in a large open jumping puzzle 'playground' area.

    Art - 6/10

Malchor's Leap has perhaps the most 'ghostly' color pallet of the Orrian maps - with deep purples and phantom blues predominating. The world is darker than either Straits or Cursed Shore, lending that extra sense of foreboding that does help to communicate that this is an inherently unfriendly place.

It does well for the lighting of the architecture, as well. It's a well-known secret in design that architecture looks better at night, because then you can use lighting to add an additional dimension. We see this on Malchor's Leap - because the world is darker, the lighting of various architectural elements really sticks out. Hope Falls shows this in spades - as maybe the most striking of all the vistas in Orr.

It helps that the Temples on this map are perhaps the most striking of the set. Although I have always felt that all of the Temples feel too disorganized to really come across as places of worship, the Dwayna and Lyssa temples both have striking appearances and design.

Now, sadly, we get to what drags down the whole map. As Josh Foreman - an environmental artist who worked on this map - pointed out in his recent SAB anniversary stream, Malchor's Leap struggles to convey the vision of the 'breadbasket' of Orr. This is a map that is supposed to have farming villages and some of the major cities of the continent. It is really the most-down-to-earth of the Orrian maps. None of that is conveyed in the art direction of the Orrian props. With little exception, none of the architecture gives the sense that this was a real, inhabited place. While the environmental artists clearly did the best they could with the props that they had, it's not enough. It is the worst here, where we are supposed to have evidence of the lives of simple peasants and townspeople.

Perhaps if we had received the Abaddon fractal we might have seen what this place would have looked like when people lived here. Until then, we'll always have this concept art.

    Long Term/Retention - 7/10

Malchor's Leap does okay for itself. It recently got a boost in that it is one of the stops on the underwater skimmer achievement quest. It remains to be seen how that will change retention in the long term.

But this map has two Temples, and that's none too shabby. Dwayna, especially, has long been a mainstay of vanilla meta trains. This map has never had the repeatable meta trains that Cursed Shore has, and perhaps that's okay.

Additionally, Malchor's has, from my understanding, some longstanding material farming routes. Back before megaservers, this map was the preferred map of the Orrian set for farmers. I believe it still has its farmers - proudly carrying the legacy of the undead in their fields.

Finally, a number of legendary quests require visiting this map.

    Overall - 7/10

Malchor's Leap is in an odd spot. If Straits of Devastation is a pure 'Invasion of Orr' experience, and Cursed Shore is 'the endgame one', Malchor's Leap is stuck with less of a clear identity. Perhaps that's appropriate for the map dedicated to the Goddess of Illusion.

Where it's strong, it's strong - the mystery revolving around the gilded orb is enticing, and the map also has some of the tastiest lore bits in the vanilla game. The Dwayna meta and pushing the invasion are both engaging, but the Lyssa meta is confused. Meanwhile, there are some great puzzles and other secrets on this map. It's art has both incredible highlights and strong lows in the lack of 'verisimilitude' in the environment. Overall, a bit of a mixed bag.

    -------------------

This is it, folks. Next week, it's straight to the Gates of Arah in Cursed Shore.

What do you think of today's map? Any fond memories, or strong complaints? How well do you think this map stands up in comparison to all the others?

    Don't forget that survey!

Getting destroyed as a Dragonhunter (PvE)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 03:14 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I am coming humbly here in search of guidance for my DH Guardian, I am seriously starting to lose hope and that makes me really sad because I spent a lot of time on this character.

I started playing a month and a half ago with a friend and knowing literally NOTHING about the game but having a lot of experience with World of Warcraft, I decided to pick a class that would resemble the most to the paladin. So I naturally picked Guardian.

80 levels later, full map completion (core game) done, HOT and POF bought and working on my ascended greatsword, I feel like I made a big mistake picking this profession. I feel so fragile!

My primary goal is to be able to complete all fractals. I will later go for raids and maybe in the very long run, PvP. But for now I am only interested in PvE. So I am working on my ascended gear.I have two infused ascended rings, an ascended backpack, an ascended amulet, and in three days I will have the Zojja claymore and maybe an ascended accessory. All in berserk, as everyone told me to do (I asked several people, watched and read several guides). The AR is not really the problem. The problem is that I feel so damn squishy!

I discovered two days ago (maybe after at least 80 hours of gametime) that Guardian is one of the three most fragile professions along with Elementalist and Thief (IIRC). I simply can't wrap my head around this concept. I mean when you know the game it kind of makes sense, since Guardian has very powerful defensive tools, and I guess very experienced DH players know exactly when to pop their defensive abilities depending on the encounter but as a person who knows literally nothing about GW2 (and there is so much to learn already), how can you guess from the get go that a mesmer or a necromancer is more durable than a guardian? When you are new to the game you think "Ok, guardian = paladin, heavy armor, protects and heals people with maybe a spec to deal damage" not "glasscanon suicidal berserk". That's very very odd. And when I encounter a new boss, even if I decide to stay at range with my scepter to observe their abilities, I usually get one or two shotted out of nowhere. Even with the mistlock singularities mastery...On top of that, I feel like the DPS rotation is clunky and the abilities cooldown simply don't fit smoothly one with another. But I guess I need to be more experienced to master that rotation.

Anyways... I know what you will tell me "If you don't like it, just change profession". The problem is that I spent a lot of time on my guard. I really want to make it work. So instead of just giving up the profession/spec, I would like to know what to do to improve. Are there ressources I miss? Is there an experienced DH player that could help me?
Also I am not yet in a guild so maybe going to fractals with an organized group instead of PUG (where nobody ever talks, say "hello" or "goodbye") would be better?

Feeling pretty desperate and down at the moment.

Best solo class with a twist?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:33 AM PDT

I'm a returning player, stopped in 2013. My first character was a ranger who I got to 80 but then switched to ele who I got 100% map completion. The twist is that I play via a controller, it's more enjoyable for me. Knowing that, I am at a disadvantage. Ele was quite more difficult to play with the controller, and I had problems running around solo with harder mobs.

This time around I'd like to play an easier class that can run around for 100% map completion. What I'm looking for is a class that doesn't require as much button mashing and swapping like the ele. Thanks for any suggestions or tips.

Are the Anniversary Sales Really Over Already?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 11:33 AM PDT

According to the official GW2 Facebook, the shared inventory slots are the last item in this anniversary sale which if true is quite a let down. Why is this sale not even 20 days long when the past 2 years have been a month or longer? Why are storage expansions, equipment templates, and build templates (among other items) all missing despite being in the March Sale? I thought the anniversary sale had the reputation to be the biggest and best yearly sale! Please tell me I'm not alone here feeling disappointed if this is actually the end of the anniversary sale.

I was planning on spending a lot of money to buy templates on my characters but I don't think the normal prices are reasonable (800 gems for build + equipment!). Please let this be a mistake and give me a reason to buy gems and support this game Anet!

Is there a way to change characters race?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:49 AM PDT

Wanted to get into GW2 again. Stopped playing before they even released their first expansion. Had one of those freaks as a character, and wanted to change it into another race. Is that possible? I got him to max level on vanilla and i also 100% all the map, so I don't want to restart a new one

Game isn't reaching the fps cap while my CPU and GPU Utilization are nowhere near maxed?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:12 AM PDT

I'm after upgrading my motherboard and CPU; used to be an i5-9400F, now a Ryzen 9 3900X. GPU was and still is a GTX1660.

I went to get my daily login for the first time since upgrading, in the Black Citadel, and noticed my framerate seemed off. I used to be bottlenecked by my CPU, but that's not the case any more.

I started running around the area with the options menu open to view framerate, and it was very rarely at 60, my set framerate cap. Sometimes in the 50s, would regularly dip into the 40s and sometimes 30s. But according to task manager, nothing was stressed. The CPU utilization was only at 23% and GPU at 48% at a point where the framerate was 42. Temperatures were fine.

So, uh...is there something potentially up with my settings? Some bug with GW?

The #1 thing I'd love from this new expac

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 10:53 AM PDT

...that probs won't happen is to allow for the world to be reconnected again. Now what I mean is all the maps that are separated by a conversation with a character , I would love to be able to walk to them. Imagine using the gate that separates Ascalon from the crystal desert? Or walking north through the snowy mountains and ending up in the icebrood saga maps? A major problem with all MMOs is the more expansions/content released, the smaller the world becomes in scope, since past content is redundant and now instead of a whole world to explore we warp to 4-5 maps. Guild Wars 2 is probably the best in this regard, as it requires going back to old content and core tyria alot (for example doing quests for the new skimmer skill on core tyria), but I'd love it if they went further and truly connected it all together so you could seamlessly walk from one end to the other.

Some may say that it needs to be like that due to it being blocked by paid content, but they could probably just send you to the story journal when you hit that wall or do what they did with season 3 and just change the landscape slightly when select the story.

Just so I make myself clear, I don't want to change the instancing of the maps and how that system works. I would just like to be able to walk to amnoon, from core tyria, and not have the only option be to warp there.

How do you guys decide on a main?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2020 05:56 PM PDT

So I jumped back into the game recently. I've played Guardian since launch, and I like the class a lot. So much so that I farmed a ton of gold and made full ascended gear for him. I also leveled an alt to 80, an elementalist, and I'm really enjoying Weaver a lot. It's fast paced and very engaging, but obviously I don't have my full ascended on my elementalist.

I've made it pretty far into T1 fractals on my guardian, and I'm definitely further in terms of world completion. I don't really have a desire to play the campaigns again, so I don't know how much that'll block me out of doing things on my elementalist.

I kinda wanna dump more time into my elementalist, but I need to get good and make another ascended set. That's obviously an undertaking.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? What did you do, play both or switch? I just don't know what to do D:

    PLS ask for help :)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:42 AM PDT

    Hey there Guys,

i have been playing this game for quite some time and i noticed that there are a lot of new players running around doing strikes, fracs and raids.

But pls if you havent done some of this content and plan on doing so... watch a guide on how it works or ask in a training group beforehand and know how you are supposed to play the character you are playing.

It is exhausting to play with someone who pretends that he/she knows what is happening and then often dies, wiping the group.

If you need help watch some of the thousands guides online or just PM ppl like me ingame (or Reddit) who say that they will help you figure things out.

    (In game: tyronios.6589)

    Wish you the best

PS: Sorry for this little rend... i didn't have a lot of time recently but often try to get my stuff done like strikes or fracs. And while pug groups can be a ride sometimes recently it has been really bad (at least for me) when it comes to "bad groups" as in a lot of wiping, running around like headless chickens and so on. Just wanted to share this... If you are a new player: This is not meant to be an insult, just an advice. Knowing what is happening makes the game far more enjoyable for you and your group ^^
