[Survey Results] What is your favorite part of Guild Wars, and why do you keep coming back?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 03:24 AM PST

Last week, I made a post and a survey asking why you like Guild Wars, and why you enjoy playing it still after all these years.

The survey got 99 answers, way more than I expected. Anyway, here's a summary of your answers!

    PvE/PvP split

    • 88% prefer PvE over PvP, making it a very large majority of the player base

I would assume that the dwindling PvP playerbase is part of the cause, and that the PvPers left for other games, e.g. MOBAs.

    PvE distribution

Most people enjoy doing the story in NM and HM, and vanquishing. NM makes up for 60.6%, while HM and vanquishing amount to 62.6%. One third of people (29.3%) enjoy speed clears the most.

    PvP distribution

The remaining PvPers are mostly casual players, as 76.8% prefers the Factions type of PvPvE (FA, JQ, AB). About 30% still plays Random Arena's (which surprised me since reporting bots are so prevalent there). Only 8% plays GvG, and 19.2% plays Heroes' Ascent.

My main takeaway is that PvPvE is most popular. No doubt the weekly events play a big role in that. GvG requires a large group of coordinated players, and Heroes' Ascent too.

    Theorycrafting

Only 16.2% of players do not enjoy crafting builds for their team. 7% only enjoys it for PvP, 32.3% for PvE, and 44.4% enjoys doing it in both game modes.

Seems like Guild Wars' skill system is indeed a very large part of what makes it popular, making builds for yourself and your heroes.

    Ratings

Guild Wars was (expectedly) rated very high. 19.2% gave it 4/5 stars, while 80.8% gave it 5/5. There were no 3, 2 or 1 star ratings. Of course, these results are inflated because I asked it here ;)

Guild Wars 2 was rated okay-ish. Only 7.8% of the respondents have not tried it. Those who did, rated it on average 3/5.

    • 4.3% gave it 1 star.
    • 33.3% gave it 2 stars.
    • 39.8% gave it 3 stars.
    • 18.3% gave it 4 stars.
    • 4.3% gave it 5 stars.

This means that over 1/3 of respondents failed GW2. Most of you seem to enjoy it, but likely not as much as Guild Wars. Otherwise, why would you be here, right?

    Conclusion

It seems like PvE is most popular, and build crafting is a large part of the appeal of the game. I wonder if PvP would be a larger portion of the playerbase, if the playerbase was larger.

The playerbase is fairly negative to neutral about Guild Wars 2, but very much enjoys Guild Wars.

Thanks all for answering, I think this was quite an interesting survey!

Why is Apocrypha in Fahranur in the first place?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 09:05 PM PST

This is one mission that made very little sense to me in Nightfall, why is Apocrypha in Fahranur in the first place? Nothing in GW lore seems to tie Fahranur back to Abaddon. It makes no sense to me why Apocrypha would be in Fahranur.

Especially since this is how Nightfall starts and Apocrypha is a well known monster (as General Kahyet specifically it out), I feel the origin of this monster should be more flushed out. On wiki.guildwars.com, all they say is " An old legend claims that it fell out of the sky as a gift from the stars," which is just absurdly vague. I don't even know where in game they got this "legend" to add to the lore. Are they trying to tie the scarab plague back to Abaddon's influence? And even if they are, it still does not explain how Apocrypha arrived in Fahranur. Or is there just some kind of lore I didn't read?

Why did they abandon Hero Battles und Team Arenas?

Why did they abandon Hero Battles und Team Arenas?

    I always wondered.

Also why did they make HA to 6 players and then back to 8?

Maybe someone of you knows. Thanks

    Prophecies or Complete bundle?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:41 AM PST

    Hi,

I am planning to get into GW1 after a lot of GW2 and hearing so much praise of 1. I am a bit reluctant to buy the full package right away though. Am I going to miss something by starting with just Prophecies and getting the rest later if I enjoy it? Thanks.

Changing Resolutions Causing Freezing / Crash

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 10:11 AM PST

Looked around the last few days & there are no current topics on this. Trying to come back to GW but this issue is making it hard.

I play on a 4k monitor & the UI scaling obviously is not great. Even using the Larger option available is still too small at 4k. I've seen a few older threads talking about asking for larger options & that would be amazing if it ever happened.

My issue is the game runs great but when I set the resolution to 1080 or 1440 fullscreen to make the UI legible, it causes the game to freeze & lock up my pc, where-in I have to reboot. It's primarily always around resurrection shrines. So in the tutorial its easy to test because the freeze is consistent in those rez shrine areas.

Assuming more UI scaling options are not coming. Does anyone have any ideas on either making the UI larger or potential work arounds that might alleviate the system lockups that playing at lower resolutions causes?

Does anyone play at 4k but is able to drop the resolution to 1440 or 1080 & have it not freeze?

I've tried everything I can think to troubleshoot:

    Low gfx settings

    Different resolutions

    -repair in target line

    Windows compatibility settings/admin

My system is current & updated. Asus hero board 9900k proc 2080ti 32gb ran Ssd

Im tempted to restore my pc to test it after a fresh install but obviously I'd rather not go though all that unless Im absolutely sure its only my system.

Thanks for reading & any feedback.
