    Botting in WvW

    Botting in WvW

I came across two players in WvW today. I didn't really notice something was off until I tried to communicate with them, without any succes. Then I started noticing their movement in straight lines, rapid direction changes when camps were able to be flipped again and them doing all those things at the same time. So I reported them. I decided to follow them to make sure I wasn't wrong about my assumption and we came across another, real, player. I told them that they were bots, but the person then asked why they would want to report bots that help our own team.

Imo this is a very big concern. Essentially non existing players taking objectives isn't only a problem for the enemy teams, but for everyone. Now my question is: Why is Anet not doing smth against it? Those two accounts had legendary weapons and raid titles, so they probably don't give a f* about risking a ban on their mains, since they know Anet probably won't do anything anyways. Let's say "well, afk farmers and bots aren't hurting anyone, and maybe their impact on the tp isnt significant enough to change the economy" or whatever. But this certainly doesn't apply to a WvW matchup, where the points the bots gather actually influence it.

Ranger/Soulbeast pet swapping still isn't functioning correctly with template swapping or during water-mount interactions

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 06:55 AM PDT

The August 17 patch had the intention of fixing various ranger/soulbeast pet merging/swapping issues when going underwater, mounting, or swapping templates. However, I have managed to consistently replicate multiple bugs even after the patch. I will highlight 4 main examples of this with videos to show what I'm doing.

Bugs 1 and 2 will highlight the bugs arising from the template swap system with pets, while bugs 3 and 4 will highlight bugs arising from underwater transitioning and mounting.

Bug 1A: (Ranger bug, persists with soulbeast merging)

Video - In this video, template 1 has red moa in slot 1 and rock gazelle in slot 2, template 2 has rock gazelle in slot 1 and black bear in slot 2. Template 3 is used as a "reset" and has none of the three pets listed. Slot 1 is active. Notice how template 2's rock gazelle changes to a red moa.

Situation: Template 1 has pet A in slot 1 and pet B in slot 2. Template 2 has pet B in slot 1 and pet C in slot 2. Your active pet slot is slot 1.

Step 1) Start on template 1 (slot 1)

Step 2) Switch to template 2

At this point, what should happen is that you unmerge with pet A, your pet swaps to pet B, and then you remerge with pet B.

However, what ends up happening is that your active pet remains as pet A despite being on template 2. The problem here is twofold. First, you remain merged with the wrong pet. Secondly, even if you unmerge, pet swap (F4) and swap between active pets, the pet in template 2 slot 1 will remain as pet A rather than the correct pet B. This means template 2 will now incorrectly have pet A in slot 1 and pet C in slot 2 (unchanged) until you manually change the pet back (with the pet menu), or swap to a template without pet A in slot 2, then swap back to template 2. If you swap to any template, even a third one, where pet A is in slot 2, you will have to manually change back your pet to the correct one no matter what kind of template swapping you do.

Bug 1B (Ranger bug, persists with soulbeast merging)

Video - In this video, template 1 has rock gazelle in slot 1 and red moa in slot 2, template 2 has black bear in slot 1 and rock gazelle in slot 2. Template 3 is used as a "reset" and has none of the three pets listed. Slot 2 is active. Notice how template 1's rock gazelle changes to black bear.

Similar to 1A, however, the bug seems to be inconsistent when comparing slot 1 and slot 2.

Situation: Template 1 has pet B in slot 1 and pet A in slot 2. Template 2 has pet C in slot 1 and pet B in slot 2. Your active pet slot is slot 2.

Step 1) Start on template 1 (slot 2)

Step 2) Switch to template 2

At this point, the interaction proceeds normally, unlike if the pet slots were switched (1A). Your pets will swap from template 1 to 2 normally. However, the issue arises when swapping back.

Step 3) Switch back to template 1 (or any template with pet B in slot 1)

What happens here is different from 1A, in that your active pet slot (slot 2) is unaffected. However, slot 1 still has the same bug as in 1A. This means that when swapping back from template 2 to template 1, the pet in slot 1 (not your active pet) will change from pet B to pet C. This means the bug is affected by which pet is active (out of the two per build), rather than simply a matter of pet combination.

Bug 2: (Ranger bug, persists with soulbeast merging)

Video - In this video, template 1 has rock gazelle in slot 1 and red moa in slot 2, template 2 has red moa in slot 1 and rock gazelle in slot 2. Template 3 is used as a "reset" and has neither pet. Notice how the red moa and rock gazelle swap spots when switching between the two templates.

Very similar to situation 1A, but with the difference of having pet A in slot 2 of template 2, rather than a separate pet C.

Situation: Template 1 has pet A in slot 1 and pet B in slot 2. Template 2 has pet B in slot 1 and pet A in slot 2. It's sort of irrelevant which slot is active in this case.

Step 1) Start on template 1

Step 2) Switch to template 2

Similar to 1A, what should happen is that the swapping from template 1 to template 2 should change your active pet, if you're in slot 1, from pet A to pet B. However, what it does instead is that it swaps the two pets around between slots in template 2. This changes template 2, making is have pet A in slot 1 and pet B in slot 2, similar to template 1. However, this, unlike bug 1B, would cause trouble even if you're staying on pet slot 2. If not for this bug, templates could very easily be used for pet swapping (using 2 templates) without unmerging (while ooc of course).

    Bugs 1 & 2 notes

All of these bugs can and will interact with each other, making mapping out every possibility challenging. However, I just wanted to outline the root of the bugs in its simplest form here. There can be even more buggy interactions if you include a third template. If template 2 is bugged after swapping into it from template 1, swapping to template 3 then back to 2 may or may not fix the bug on template 2 based on the pet combination of template 3 and current active slot. In addition, it may bug out template 3 and further add to the problems if you actively need to switch between 3 builds with slightly different pets. The bugs can all be replicated in conjunction with each other, making swapping between active pets and templates a huge headache if you run the same pet on two or more builds.

Both of these bugs basically do the same thing when used with soulbeast merging as well. The 17 august patch fixed soulbeast merging on template swaps, but this issue persists under the new mechanics.

When templates are bugged, it seems that the pet which is bugged (always slot 1 it seems) will maintain what it was originally in the template itself, but will activate a different pet if it's bugged. If you are able to swap to a 3rd template and back, where the 3rd template does not have pets A, B or C, it will usually fix the template. However, if template 3's interactions with 1/2 are further bugged, you will be forced to manually select your original pet again, making it a very troublesome process.

In the videos, you can actually see that the pet in the build menu window reflects the correct one for the template, but the pet window shows the bugged template pet.

    Bug 3A: (Soulbeast bug)

    Video

    Step 1) Merge with pet

    Step 2) Enter water

Step 3) Immediately when the pet unmerges/changes, mount your skimmer

This results in your pet being stowed once you dismount your skimmer. In the video, I was able to capture mounting during the period where the UI shows the pet as stowed rather than just unmerged, causing it to remain stowed once I dismount. Normally, if you do it when the pet is still unmerged but not stowed, the pet will remain unmerged but not stowed when you dismount (see 3B).

    Bug 3B: (Soulbeast bug)

    Video

Step 1) Merge with pet (in water)

    Step 2) Exit water

Step 3) Immediately when the pet unmerges/changes, mount any mount

This results in your pet being stowed once you dismount whatever mount you're on. This is basically the opposite of bug 3A, but it's the same concept, just exiting water rather than entering.

Notably, 3A and 3B aren't straight up spaghetti code bugs, but it's just how the system interacts with the new changes added on 17 august. Because the re-merge system functions slowly enough that you can perform actions during the duration, it leads to interactions like this where you can still unmerge yourself if you mount too fast.

    Bug 4 (Soulbeast bug)

    Video

Step 1) Merge with your pet

Step 2) Walk into a shallow part of water (where you can enter then exit smoothly)

Step 3) Once you're in the water (skills disappear), immediately step out

This will cause you to do a series of merging and unmerging with your pet, and the final result is that your pet is stowed (but somehow still merged), and cannot be un-stowed. If you press the merge skill, you will instead unmerge with your pet, despite the UI showing your pet as being stowed and unmerged (no glow around merge skill). This can be fixed by re-entering water and coming back out. Entering water in this state will fix it, performing the usual series of unmerging, changing pets then re-merging with the new pet, and continues working normally when you exit water again.

    Conclusion

Underwater/mount interactions and build template swapping are still very, very bugged even with the fixes they implemented in the august 17 patch. These are just 4 bugs which I have been able to replicate consistently. I've definitely had many other buggy interactions happen, but never paid attention to the conditions under which they appear. These aren't 'gamebreaking', but they're definitely very annoying. Entering fights with the wrong pet or having 9 seconds of being unmerged because of a bug is a real pain in the ass in open world. This happens a lot especially at octovine for me, because of the pools of water at the end-zone.

As for the pet swapping, it looks like a very spaghetti code thing. Hopefully anybody who reads this can configure their pets in a way that they'll be able to work around the bug for the time being.

Hopefully Anet are aware of this already and are working on a fix. I'd hate for this to be a permanent thing or end up like revenant legends.

Worthwile to start playing GW2 as of today?

    Hi all,
Was an avid GW player, but stopped with MMO's for a while due to the regular life stuff and not having enough time.

Saw some news about GW2 again, and got me curious again. Is it worthwile to get into this now, knowing that you cannot spend 20+ hours a week on an MMO? Is the game still active enough to play with others?

    Thanks!

On internet i can find pictures of it being used and changing the hair color to bright yellow, does it always do that no matter what color your hair was originally? What if the hair of my character is pink? Would it be bright pink? Or still yellow?
