    "Look up" quests

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 08:40 PM PDT

Do you guys remember what Nika would say in the Echovald Forest?

"I have never been outside of Kaineng City. Did you see that giant tree with all the windows? You should really look up often, otherwise you might miss something."

I decided to hop onto the game tonight, to reminisce and explore the world. I just went to Maatu Keep and talked to the first NPC with a quest marker I saw, and he gives out quests called Charting the Forests/Sea where the object is just you running around to different locations in the Canthan colonies. No killing or anything, just exploring the detailed landscape, being invited to look at the easter eggs...it's so clear that people put love and care into creating this world, with so many small and yet endlessly evocative details they did not have to add. There are so many things I have no memory of, or may have never even noticed before. Sorry I didn't take screencaps to share, you might have to go looking yourself.

I just wanted to say this generous, almost redundant, seeding of Tyria with detail is what keeps me coming back for over a decade. Side-quests are one of the least talked-about gameplay avenues, but to me they're one of the most precious so many years on.

(Also, not to get political, but one of the reasons I am sometimes put off from playing is because a lot of quests I've wanted to do seem arbitrarily campaign-locked. I could be misremembering, but I remember a lot of side-quests being restricted to characters of a particular campaign origin, when there wasn't any clear lore-related or gameplay-related reason for them to be so. It's been a while and I may have misunderstood or not noticed something, am I wrong?)

AB - Playerbase Extremely Aggressive towards Newcomers?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 04:42 PM PDT

Joined AB, spent about 1.5 hrs lfg, got told to f-off by about 3 people, and pretty much just kicked around in outpost without being able to actually play a match.
Few group invites with kicks and jeering of 'you thought you'd actually get to play one? lol!', etc...

Just thought I'd point out why people are having a hard time joining this game mode.

    Revisiting Over The Limit

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 09:03 AM PDT

The least loved anniversary skill, Over the Limit for our poor eles.

    https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Over_the_Limit

Elite Enchantment Spell. While you maintain this enchantment, your spells cast 15...19...20% faster, and recharge 15...43...50% faster, but you continuously gain Overcast.

    Example Build

I think this skill has been at least a little underrated. If you put it up right at the start of a fight and drop it within 10 seconds, your incurred overcast is negligible. In return, you generally get to cast your nukes like Rodgort's an additional time or two per fight. Most fights don't last all that long, and it doesn't hurt to close out the fight with no elite on a Fire ele that would usually run a passive elite anyway like Elemental Attunement.

I think the secret to understanding this skill is seeing GW as a series of 15-30 second fights, rather than some continuous battle. In a continuous battle, OTL is garbage. If you see GW as 30 seconds fighting followed by 15 seconds running repeated over and over OTL makes a lot more sense.

Recharging spells ~45% faster guaranteed is actually pretty cool. If you cast your first volley of spells and then drop the enchantment it never really catches up with you. The faster casting and a 40/40 set means you can often open fights with something like OTL->Ebon Assassin->Intensity->Rodgort's->Incendiary Bonds->Fireball or Liquid Flame or whatever->Rodgort's again->drop OTL until next fight, then before everything dies all of your spells are recharged for round 2. Sometimes, Rodgort's is back up before you get to the end of the rotation so you can get a second OTL Rodgort's off without missing much. You just have to be conservative and drop OTL if it isn't going to lead to big damage. My rule is if it's my second cast of anything other than Rodgort's, I drop OTL first.

Realistically, the ideal situation is that you get 3-5 Rodgorts in a fight by using OTL instead of 2-3.

Elemental Attunement fire has fallen out of favor because stuff just dies too fast. OTL gives you a second round of spells when they actually matter, instead of Rodgort's coming back once everything is basically dead anyway. Having Rodgort's back by the time you can cast a few other spells and get back to it is awesome.

Fights are short in modern GW. OTL basically ensures that you get a second round of your fire spells. It would also work with Earth nukes, I guess, but I think Fire is where it shines.

OTL does suck against big bosses, but GW doesn't have many of those, and most of the time if you're against a big boss it's at the end of something where you can afford to Overcast yourself to oblivion because you won't have to fight more afterwards. I also imagine it's not very effective somewhere like Slaver's Exile with a lot of healers/defenses where fights can slip up and last a minute or two. These areas are exceedingly rare though.

I think it might be a sleeper and actually be in the top 10 Ele elites. It's clearly worse than Starburst and Invoke, Ether Renewal's SC adoption and general power/flexibility can not be ignored...but after that it gets murky. Several other Air elites are probably better(Thunderclap, maybe Blinding Surge, maybe Gust). Shockwave is really good. However, I think OTL might genuinely be better than the non-Starburst Fire elites. OTL may honestly be the best non-PBAoE fire build for general PvE where fights are short, decisive, and have a little downtime between(~10s at least)...which is most of PvE.

Anyway...Just sharing -- I'm a long time Ele main that wanted to revisit this skill and didn't find it just totally awful. I think it's at least on par with the old Elemental Attunement fire bars, though IMO clearly behind Starburst/Invoke which are enormously powerful with properly timed Intensity. Give this skill another visit!

    Steam Deck

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 04:27 PM PDT

Valve's soon to be released Steam Deck is coming in December. Who is actually looking forward to playing Guild Wars on this new tech gadget or do you think this pc gamer console will not be able to step up to the plate and this game will not run on this new platform? According to the specs, there is not much this powerhouse couldn't run, so I don't see how it could leave this game out. Your whole Library should be available to play on the Deck and GW is a game you can purchase from Steam, so Why Not? I imagine since its a touchscreen, so games like GW would allow you to finger press skills. Maybe with some tweaking to the screen layout and position of those bars so you could have them at your fingertips(no pun intended) although there is a fair bit of buttons to align to. If you have any info that contradicts any reason to maybe get excited share the links so we can all be better informed.

I wish GW could be ported to consoles

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 10:56 AM PDT

Considering the cap on the number of skills to the hotbar, instanced missions & world outside of cities, and low hardware requirements; I think GW1 would be a great port to consoles & still be really fun. Sure AoE would take some getting used to but I'd love nothing more than getting off work & playing GW on my big screen & sitting on the couch.

Never going to happen but a man can dream right?
