A Letter from a former WoW player to those also trying Guild Wars 2

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 08:21 PM PDT

    To whom it may concern,

I get it, you are searching for something new. To fill that void that you now have to play an MMO. Maybe your reason is different from mine but you have stubbled across this game called Guild Wars 2 in hopes that it might give you the same satisfaction that WoW once did.

I hope this letter receives you well because it took me some time to unlearn certain behaviors and expectations. As a former hardcore mythic raider and casual pvp'er I know the feelings you may have to jump into this game and go full throttle to hit end content. I realize and acknowledge we are all not the same and what you find enjoyable and fun may not line up with me. But, in hopes that you understand what you are walking into I send this letter attached with some recommendations that might help your experience as you enter this amazing and beautiful world.

I urge you first to slow down. I had to break the mold the rushing. In WoW we live in this world that is dictated by patches and you have to be max level so you can do your dailies and hit all the other systems so that you can make you character be as strong as they can be because you know it's always only months away before all of it is zero'd out and you have to do it again.

In Guild Wars everything you do for progression matters. All the things you do from leveling to acquiring gear to end game stays relevant. Don't worry there is a million things to do but you don't need to rush. You aren't going to miss cutting edge or your keystone master. Everything you do progresses your character and in many ways your overall account makes a difference in some way. So it okay.

Next, I would say to do what you enjoy. It was so refreshing in Guild Wars to take the game for what it was and just go straight to what I wanted to do. I didn't realize until I stepped away from WoW that I spent 80% of my time navigating homework related stuff so that I could spend 20% of my time doing the stuff I actually play the game to do.

My last recommendation (though this one is much more personal) don't skip steps. As I said before in WoW I was a mythic raider. So in my mind I really wanted to jump into Guild Wars. Get mounts as fast as I could so that I could finish everything as soon as possible. I wanted to be doing the hardest content available ASAP. Though I would argue Guild Wars doesn't work exactly like that. I think you do yourself a disservice doing that. Yeah, you could just boost a level a 80 and try to get mounts but in a weird way I think it kills the magic of it all.

Remember the magic of playing a new MMO for the first time. It's okay to be leveling. It's okay to not have mounts. It's okay to enjoy the game the way it was intended. Get lost in random events and meet new people. There is so many things to learn and do. Don't cut it short and try to skip it all. Fall in love with it. It's gonna be okay.

I hope this helps. And look forward to seeing you in game.

    - From Zoracle

Edit: thanks for the awards. My hope was just that those trying the game don't miss some of the amazing aspects of this game.

Those leaked demo boxes have changed contents.

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 01:08 AM PDT

They now all display the path of fire items and/or can not be previewed. Meaning one of 2 things. Someone had an exhausted accident. Or off chance those were old demo boxes way back from development and some of them have changed.

Secret option 3, they were deliberately put in game for a moment knowing they'd be data mined because everything is always data mined, as a big brain subtle move to give people something to talk to and then pulled them out to drive further discussion of "omg they're covering it up!" or the previous leaks were real and this is all to fuck with us (courtesy of captainpott's new conspiracy theory that I love)

Correction. It does not show the list of weapons in the box. It now shows a preview of your character wielding a pof weapon

Everytime I try to clear out my material storage

Remember: ANet is staffed by humans, and software development is timely and expensive.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:37 PM PDT

Background: I freaking love GW2. I don't post much here, but like many of you I have been DEVOURING as much as possible about EOD and am super excited. I also main necro and have been super excited to try out the new specs. I am also a developer at a mobile gaming studio (that is admittedly very different than MMO development.) and feel like I have at least a little insight into the development cycles and amount of time that it takes to do a lot of these major features.

A lot of the "feedback" I've seen on this forum is really friggin sweet but also totally unrealistic for a team to implement between now and EOD's release. Complete class rework is probably sadly not going to happen without a lot of crunch by developers, which admittedly is way too common in the game development space. I don't want to speculate on specific implementations on how hard or easy single things would be, but "take this elite spec and burn it to the ground and completely rework it" is probably totally out of the cards. Do I love the elixers for Harbinger as shown? No. At the very minimum they should have their icons changed cause right now they're a total mess for colorblind people. But I do think there is some middle ground between "Do this thing that would require hundreds of dev hours to implement most likely" and remember that what we see will likely be very close to what we get come February, and temper expectation of changes.

What I see when I look at Virtuoso

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 06:03 AM PDT

Thoughts on Virtuoso from someone that doesn't like Mesmer.

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 12:39 AM PDT

    This spec is so fun!

The thing that has kept me from playing Mesmer all this time (since beta in 2012) was the clone mechanic. It never felt intuitive to me, kind of like it was a bad version of Necromancer minions, but it was essential to every basically all damage builds (I really only play DPS in this game). I know they aren't really comparable, but it's the best comparison I can come up with in this game.

I love how much damage it does and how much of the Mesmer utility you can bring. I especially love all the AoE dmg it can push out, while still having great single target as well.

The spec was so fun that it might be my main in EoD, but I'll have to wait and see what the other specs are like.

Edit: Can't believe I forgot to mention this, but the skill animations for everything look incredible, probably my 2nd favorite set of skill animations (Reaper Shroud is still my favorite so far).

Festival of the Four Winds is delayed to not overlap with the beta event

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 02:06 PM PDT

Dear Anet, THANK YOU for unlocking the other, existing Elite spec in the beta.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 10:06 PM PDT

I know the beta week is suppose to be for the testing of the new elite spec, but i love that you also unlocked the other specs.

I had this problem with guardian. I love the class but i dont like the current meta builds for it. I like using shields (as i was a paladin main on previous MMOs) however i feel put off building a healbrand, as not only does it cost resources to build one (for a player like me), but i was afraid i wont enjoy playing it as i heard they usually on the staff rather than the shield (which feels cleric-y rather than paladin), making the grinding for the gear for it a potential waste.

However thanks to the Beta, not only can i chose firebrand, but also test the builds in pve for free with the demo gear box. Now i can truly test it out in fractals and strikes and see if i like the playstyle. Also, i found a celestial "one build for all" video on youtube made by Vallun that also uses a shield but has an offensive option (plus acc to the video its viable for all gamemodes), so i can freely test the builds out. So i really apreciate the beta even more. Thank you so much.

WoW refugee really enjoying the lore in this game, any good youtube channels for it?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 11:29 PM PDT

As title says, I'm hoping to find channels like Noble87 that summarise the lore.

Enjoying picking up the story by playing the game, but super curious about some stuff that's far less explained, like the big statue dude in the fractal.

Harbinger PVP is fun and insane...

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 04:26 AM PDT

Pvp alot on this... My build is basically (soul reaping 2 2 3) (blood magic 1,3,2) (harbinger 3,1/3,2) Depends if there's alot of CC. But I'd say(3,1,2) is better

The healing out of shroud is pretty insane, most players are used to in shroud = you have extra life. But with this, out of shroud the life force basically stacks to your HP. Unless you get 1 hit. Since it heals you over time. With spectral armor and out of shroud you are basically unkillable 1v1. You gain life force for each hit 8% that heals you. It's basically heralds heal I guess? But a sht version. Though longer in duration.

The mobility is pretty insane, with flesh worm and spectral walk. It's really easy to kite people who always target necro

Now as for damage, Oh boy. With soul reaping dhum Fire and quickness from harbinger. You basically machine gun someone with torment/burn and poison. And how you can use shroud without needing life force is really good.

If you hit someone with 5 1 1 1 1 it's really insane, and with the mobility it's really nice to play

People manipulating tournaments with alt accounts

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 03:32 AM PDT

I learned today about a new "tactic", how PvP tournaments with alt accounts are manipulated.

First of all, this is an assumption, but it seems likely.

Today I joined an "all welcome" group for a PvP tournament. The first match went very well and we won. The second match also went better than expected and we were in the lead for a while and it all looked like another win. Suddenly one of our players (I think I'm not allowed to post the name here?) went afk. He was waiting at the spawn point and didn't respond to any message. After we lost the match, he also didn't accept the next match, so we were kicked out of the tournament.

He was standing around in the heart of the mists the whole time and it looked like he actually went afk. But after the group split up, he walked to a merchant and the trading post a short time later. I whispered to him and also wrote a message, but no reply. He definitely wasn't afk though, as he moved several times.

Have him of course reported and made screenshots but I think that will not help.

For me the assumption is, that this is an active manipulation of other players in the tournament to kick other teams out of the tournament.

Sorry if this is already known, I just wanted to point out to look carefully with whom you play a tournament.
