Hidden "weapon" in the game? Wayfarer's Reverie Rumor

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 12:13 PM PDT

Welcome to the 2021 GW "Hidden Weapon" Hunt.

    Maybe.

On 12 April user Horrible in the GW Global Discord noticed a Wiki edit by former ArenaNet Designer Matthew Moore.

This edit was on the Talk Page of the Wayferer's Reverie responding to an anonymous comment made 25 August 2020.

    Anonymous comment (August 2020)

I heard from somebody who heard from an ex-dev that the Xunlai Archivists are a riddle or something. Some of the references overlap, like there are two maps with Kilroy and vaettir. Not sure about the cupcake.

    Matthew Moore's comment (April 2021)

Well, I was going to create a new note, seeing as I admitted as much on Twitter today, but I'll just confirm this person was onto something. My apologies to the other devs for spoiling the secret (if we were still keeping it a secret), to the community for my part in hiding it without leaving more hints and confirmations, and especially to our QA for making 'em test something nobody would find for years. If you all get stuck looking for it and you need more hints, ask Joe Kimmes. Ha!

Matthew Moore is linking a Twitter post he made on 11 April 2021, replying to "respond with the best Easter eggs you ever hid in a game!"

There's a weapon hidden in the original Guild Wars that I don't think anyone's found yet. We hid some clues in the dialogues of some wiki editor tribute NPCs who only show up during the Wayfarer's Reverie, but...I think we hid it too well. Too poorly? Could have done it betta.

The NPCs are the eight Xunlai Archivists.

According to the anonymous poster, it could involve Kilroy, vaettir and cupcakes.

Joe Kimmes/old Live Team are the ones to can provide more hints and information.

Update 08:08 13-April: Matthe Moore confirmed it is not a RNG drop: link

Oh my Dwayna, no, this is not a Mini Polar Bear situation. Meeting the conditions should produce a 100% success rate of triggering...the thing. 😅 (...with only this caveat.)

    The caveat is:

Also, after talking with Joe and Zack Nickerson (Live Team QA), I thought it would be helpful to put a point in writing: This was intended as an Easter egg, which means we didn't test it as rigorously as core content (or even outside our staging environment), and it was never intended to be core content. It's eight-years-old, unmonitored, unmaintained content. Will it work? Probably. 🤞 But even if you can cobble together the proper steps to perform this magic trick, it also may not. So if it doesn't, please don't go asking Stephen Clarke-Willson to put it on the low-hanging fruit list for a fix. 👊 I'm rooting for you, and if you unearth this long-hidden treasure, it'll be a delight to you and me, but please keep it in perspective. 🧐 Thanks and good hunting!

Update 01:29 13-April: Further updates by Matthew Moore to the Reverie talk page

I just spoke with Joe Kimmes (to apologize in advance for sending him a bunch of eager info requests), and he said he is pretty darn sure that this can be acquired outside of the Wayferer's Reverie. So you can safely continue the testing of other conditions.

Update 00:26 13-April: Matthew Moore also replied on Twitter some more, a full list is on: this post. Summary:

[Is it only available to be found during Reverie? ] we're gonna need to call on somebody who both worked on it and is still at ANet, like Robert Gee or Joe Kimmes. Maybe hit up their talk page on the wiki (Now answered above)

I can tell you that some of the clues were hella obscure and even potentially misleading, like when Xunlai Archivist Jonemon talks about "...if the Gods didn't shine their grace upon us..." the clues isn't about needing the GRACE of the Gods but...something else (Favor of the Gods?)

It requires [Light of Deldrimor in the middle of Lake Drakkar, while under Lucky Aura, Cupcake and Favor of the Gods] I am (after ~8 years) reasonably certain a few of these things are actually part of unlocking this Easter egg.

Update 00:17 13-April: Matthew Moore has kindly joined us in the subreddit /u/Ironmaus:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/GuildWars/comments/mpl0jp/hidden_weapon_in_the_game_wayfarers_reverie_rumor/gub1tt6/

We added the item and the trigger mechanism at the same time as we added the NPCs in 2013. No need to dig back too far. Heck, I don't know how many people outside the Live Team at that point knew about it. [Can't give everything away (in part because I don't remember it all), but I don't want to see y'all beating your heads against 16 years of content.]

    TLDR:

    • A "weapon", hidden in GW that no one has found yet.(?)

    • Clues are in the dialogues of some of the wiki editor tribute NPCs who only show up during the Wayferer's Reverie.(?)

Some of us have been discussing this today on Discord, looking through the NPC dialogues, and a summary made into this Google Doc.

Edit: 08:56 13-April: So as not to cause confustion I've removed the original 'theories' so we can start to build something that is a bit clearer as to what is likey/unlikely.

All update/edit tags posted in UTC time.

Reddit, what do you think: Is it all made up? Can we narrow down what this hidden weapon may be? Anyone (work out how to) find it?

The Low Hanging Fruit - Resurrected!

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 02:39 PM PDT

Good Evening Tyrians, Canthans, and Elonians!

It is that lovely time of year again. Time to get your hopes up and get those low-hanging fruit juices flowing.

You may have noticed a few QoL updates taking place recently thanks to none other than our local GW legend /u/DrStephenCW

Stephen has been hard at work and has requested that this list get bumped with more visibility here at Reddit: https://i.imgur.com/X3FJ16n.png

So please, feel free to post and discuss low-hanging fruit ideas here. Keep your suggestions mindful of what "low-hanging fruit" means as Stephen does not have unlimited resources to single handedly create Utopia for us or vanquish evil permanently from Tyria.

List of low hanging fruit as well as previously commented on suggestions and updates: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nfH2XMpU3Pq6vUX_HR5ss1Mr4VIdk69MMGyBae9wRic/edit?hl=en#gid=0 - This document will be maintained by myself and a few other trusted members.

Keep it clean and keep it constructive. And if you don't have any ideas, give Stephen a shout out for all the work and consideration he gives the GW community.

Daybreak - Custom launcher for GuildWars

Daybreak - Custom launcher for GuildWars

Hey guys/gals. I've recently returned to Guild Wars after more than 10 years of not playing it and it quickly became my new downtime/stress management activity.

Last week I've read on wiki that you can specify command line arguments to auto-authenticate when you start the game, without having to type in your password every time. Thus, the idea was born to make a quick utility/tool to handle this, as I didn't want to store the auth credentials in a plain-text script.

As more ideas came to mind, I've gotten to implementing more features into the tool and it kind of evolved into a launcher.

Anyway, long story short, I've brought it up to a stable state and released it under MIT license. Here's the github link: Daybreak: Custom launcher for Guildwars. (github.com). The github page also contains a few gifs showcasing the launcher as well as a list of features and usages.

If anybody wants to try it out, I've uploaded the compiled sources here: https://github.com/AlexMacocian/Daybreak/releases/latest.

The executable should contain all dependencies used, so that nothing else should be required in order to run the client. Only requirement is WebView2 in order to run the browser instances contained in the app.

Any feedback/criticism is welcome. Also if you have any ideas, please shoot. If they are feasible/if I know how to tackle them, I'll gladly implement them into the launcher.

Ps. Thanks a lot to annarti for letting me use pictures from her blog (bloogum.net) as the default background of Daybreak.

    Mercenaries

    Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:19 AM PDT

I'm having trouble getting my mercenaries to attack. I put them in attack mode and they just stand there doing nothing. It's my first time using them. I created pvp characters and made them my mercenaries. Registered them and added them to my party. Start the mission and they just stand there. What am I doing wrong?
