Why is PvP mode not free to play?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 03:35 AM PST

The title says it all, they should make pvp free to play with the basic pvp skills, it would revive the pvp, making it playable. Also people liking the game would probably go and buy the campaign afterwards. Everyone would get benefits from this move. What do you guys think?

Proposal for "quick fix" for HA - to encourage more players to participate

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:05 AM PST

GvG, after 15 years has managed to survive. It is still possible to join reasonably skilled teams during daily tournaments (Europe time) and play high quality matches - particularly during the monthly automated tournaments.

While I like GvG a lot, I have a lot of nostalgia for Heroes Ascent, which was the format I was passionate about when I was a teenager. I think I am not alone in wishing that HA was still popular. HA unfortunately is a lot more "dead" than GvG.

So why did GvG survive and HA didn't? I think the main answer is that HA rewards the best players to "spread out in time." The goal is to "hold halls" or win at the Hall of Heroes the most amount of times to get rewards. And this encourages playing at different time intervals. Additionally, even when players want to play real people - usually you wait until you see a full team of 8 in Halls. By the time you get a full team ready and fight through the bots in HA - their team is likely "capped" (there is a maximum amount of fame you can receive in a day, so players leave after this is achieved), and you end up fighting a half-afk team of people who have already quit.

This issue creates a second issue, which is that the "prestige" rewards for winning have become meaningless. It used to be that "fame" was very challenging to get, and having a higher rank was a good representation of experience (and maybe skill). But now it has lost all meaning and just represents how many days/weeks/months you've spent afk in Hall of Heroes.

Is there a possible "quick fix" that could be implemented by developers that would fix these issues?

    I have a unique proposal:

Create a special time window where players can get a brand new title. So normally when you win games in HA, you get normal fame. When you win in HA on this special event (let's say: for 3days in a row every month), you get a new "special fame" (or whatever name you want to give it), and it adds up to a new title. The main reason why this would work well is that it would force the player base to "squeeze" together in a small time interval - so there is significantly more population density playing at the same time. The frequency of the event can be squeezed to even smaller intervals if the population of players is still to small. (you could squeeze it down to 1 day every 2 months, or a 12 hours every month, if for example there is still not a large enough player base).

I think this alone would be enough to encourage some real competitiveness among the player base, but here's a list of some more things that could be added on top to make it even better:

    • Additionally, because the time window is so short, the devs could consider to improve the chest rewards (during the event) without inflating the economy.
    • Adding some flavor to the new title would go far I think. It might be simple for the developers to create a color swap on the origional emotes. For example here's a (badly photoshopped) blue color swap: https://imgur.com/v0bKZFS
    • If you do these things in combination with making the PvP access kit free (or at least cheaper), I think it would cause a big jump in popularity.
