    [Critique] Dragon Bash and the small things that matter

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:14 AM PDT

    Dragon Bash, while being the youngest of the current lineup of the festivals, is quite well developed. With its decent amount of different activities that can be performed daily and a comprehensive daily system, it's certainly a good and fun festival. However, all the main aspects of Dragon Bash are plagued by small issues that negatively influence the experience.

    Hologram Stampedes:

    The feature returning from the original 2013 release, Stampedes let us relive the feeling of Season 1-style Open World events. However, with the current balance of mobs, timers and existence of mounts, it becomes somewhat annoying:

    • Regular mobs spawned by the holo projectors die too fast, especially under overwhelming amounts of dps;

    • Veteran mobs, on the other hand, overscale into oblivion and always take too much time to kill;

    • While stampede events themselves can go by extremely quickly due to amount of dps and use of mounts, the intervals between them render the time fruitless, it's long enough to get boring but not long enough to do anything substantial in-game.

    Especially the first two points can be very annoying for non-PoF players – getting to a hologram fast enough to tag anything without a mount is often not possible. On top of that, even if you have mounts and your hardware allows for fast load times, Veteran mobs can keep you in combat long enough to render you unable to tag too many events. Interestingly enough, loading in on a low population instance makes for a much better experience – there's not that many players per each hologram event which means each player gets to contribute more and complete more events. There's also a sense of positive urgency compared to the current state – you are racing against the time, not other players. The current problems are getting evident when paired against the Minion Masher daily achievement – one stampede should be enough to kill 30 mobs but often you get capped at around 75%. We shouldn't be forced to wait over 10 minutes for another round (in general), or be required to go into Dragon Bash Arena just to kill seven more mobs for the daily. Disabling mounts map-wide for the duration of the Stampede, lowering population cap by half for all four maps for the entire Dragon Bash, and rebalancing Holographic mobs could resolve most issues – it would make each player contrbute more in overall, allow everyone to tag more mobs, as well as make the intervals between events shorter.

    Dragon Bash Arena:

    Being the new feature introduced with festival's return in 2019, Dragon Arena was a success. It offers fun and challenge for both public groups and squads. However, there are still small problems with it:

    • Halstein, the Arena announcer is inaudible when you take few steps away from him;

    • Branded mobs spawn before both Branded Hydra and Vinetooth, there are no Holographic Mordrem;

    • Music tracks accompanying the boss fights do not match their respective theme. There are six tracks that get randomly assigned to a boss. These tracks are:

      • Charr themed "March of the Legions";
      • Charr themed "The Charr Triumphant";
      • Zhaitan themed "Here Be Dragons";
      • Mordremoth themed "Mouth of Mordremoth";
      • Kralkatorrik themed "Assault on Amnoon";
      • Kralkatorrik themed "The Crystal Dragon".

    There are also two other tracks (that I don't believe were publicly released), that play during wave assault and also don't fit the theme of the arena very well;

    • There are two separate entrances even though there potentially could be one entrance using Strike Mission UI;

    • Timer for the waves of mobs starts way before any of them spawn, additionally, mobs are invulnerable and untargetable for a period of time after they appear;

    • Public groups tend to be extremely disorganized during waves of mobs, they run around the entire arena making it harder for everyone to target mobs.

    There is no logical reason why the music doesn't fit the appropriate bossfights, each Hologram boss should have one or two tracks that fit the dragon those bosses represent, wave assault could also use "Dragon Bash Instrumental" that plays in the arena before you start the event as it fits the "middle ages combat fair" theme of the festival. Holographic Mordrem mobs should be added to both Hologram Stampedes and Dragon Bash Arena. Halstein's voice should be broadcasted across the entire arena (with an appropriate sound effects) to make it feel like an actual arena challenge. Mobs should absolutely start spawning before the timer if there's nothing that can be done about the invulnerability period. Additionally, players could be encouraged to stack in predefined positions during wave assault by using appropriate area denial fields. Choosing five spots of around 40% of the arena's surface, surrounded by environmental hazard (matching the dragon aspect of the current round), that cycle during the entire event could be beneficial to the experience of everyone in the arena (damage should be enough to discourage players from leaving the safe space but not enough to make it impossible to reach the exit or vice versa, to reach the safe space when someone dies and resurrects). I'm not sure if merging both public and squad variants of the arena under Strike Mission mechanic wouldn't mess with their functionality (since both are different) but it would be a welcomed change if possible.

    Rewards

    Having a wide array of rewards with three different backpieces, two helmets, shoulder piece, two weapon sets, seven miniatures, ten Guild Hall decorations and a home instance node, Dragon Bash seems like a great festival. However, the rewards acquisition is inconsistent to majority of other festivals, some of the rewards are pure RNG with no other way of acquisition and prices of rewards purchasable with Jorbreakers are insanely high:

    • Halloween, Wintersday and Four Winds have their unique weapon sets available via daily achievements, on top, Halloween and Wintersday have reskin sets of existing weapons available as drops from festival boxes and a guaranteed one for opening 1000 of them. Dragon Bash doesn't have a unique weapon set – it has two reskins, one available from dailies and its tier2 available for purchase with Jorbreakers after unlocking t1 skin;

    • New Holographic armor skins, helmet and shoulders, are really great. They are equally amazing even without the holographic elements, however, players never got the choice between two variants;

    • Holographic Minis that drop from Dragon Coffer have extremely low drop rate and are account bound on acquire. Even if you luck out enough to get all 4 basic ones (one of them can be sold on tp), you still need a second set to craft the 5th mini in Mystic Forge;

    • Jorbreaker prices of Holographic Dragon Wings, Holographic Shattered Dragon Wings, Mini Helmed Moa Racer and Mini Dragon Gourdon, as well as prices on the weekly trader are insanely high. A single Jorbreaker went from 12g to 6g per piece this year, prices breakdown presented in the table:

    Item\Jorbreaker Price 6g 12g TP price or equivalent
    Holographic Dragon Wings – 100 J 600+g 1200+g 45 - 68g on TP / 20 Black Lion Sprockets / RNG from Wardrobe Unlock
    Holographic Shattered DW – 25 J 150+g 300+g 30 Black Lion Sprockets / RNG from Wardrobe Unlock
    Mini Helmed Moa Racer – 25 J 150+g 300+g 125 - 179g on tp/ RNG from Season 1 Memory Box and Wardrobe Unlock
    Mini Dragon Gourdon – 10 J 60+g 120+g No other acquisition method
    50 of Season 4 currency / Transmutation Charge – 1 J 6+g 12+g Many other sources
    Chest of Legendary Shards (3 shards) – 5 J 30+g 60+g ~30-60 shards for the same price via crafting
    Tyrian Exchange Voucher – 10 J 60+g 120+g Other overpriced festivals/BLC RNG drop

    As much as unintuitive the Dragon Bash weapon sets acquisition is, introducing yet another weapon set could be too much (although Festival of the Four Winds already has three of them as well). There should be two variants of every new Holographic armor skin – one with and one without the holographic parts (this critique goes to Season 4 armors as well). Holographic minis that drop from Dragon Coffers should have their drop rate increased and should either be made tradable or at least be available for Miniature Claim Tickets during the festival. Jorbreaker prices of rewards should be heavily reduced. Holographic Dragon Wings should match their TP price (5-10 Jorbreakers), Shattered Variant should be equal to the less expensive scenario (5 Jorbreakers), Mini Helmed Moa should be half of current price (~10 Jorbreakers), mini Dragon Gourdon should be half of current price (5 Jorbreakers), Season 4 currency and Transmutation Charges should have different prices (1 Jorbreaker is a good price for 50 curency but it should net at least 5 Transmutation Charges), Chest of Legendary Shards should offer two chests for 1 Jorbreaker (to match their crafting price), Tyrian Exchange Voucher should be half the current price (5 Jorbreakers).

    The Missing Parts

    Dragon Bash has a good amount of activities, but there's one that was present in 2013 and was moved to another festival since – Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball is the fun pvp activity Dragon Bash is missing, while its presence in Lunar New Year is understandable, the activity itself should get two new variants – the LNY variant with current systems but updated map visuals to indicate that it's a Celestial-themed activity in Divinity's Reach (instead of Dragon Bash in Lion's Arch) and the Dragon Bash variant – rewarding Dragon Coffers in updated map visuals to indicate that it's a Dragon Bash activity in Hoelbrak. It should also be implemented into Dragon Bash dailies. Moa Racing should also return as a permanent feature in Lion's Arch that would cycle to its Dragon Bash variant in Hoelbrak when the time comes. And for the love of Dwayna, Beetle should face the course of the adventure, not the other way around after you reset the activity!

    TL;DR: Dragon Bash could use a lot of smaller updates to its activities, return of two already existing ones (one festival and one permanent), as well as complete rebalance of rewards prices and minor additions.

    A story about Peaches

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:33 PM PDT

    Bit of context, I'm a new GW2 playerin the Yak's Bend server, username Ryujinshimada with 2 toons, an Engi and a Thief. This story takes place on my Thief, Razzill Darkbrew, around level 40 when I started this quest.

    I'm in Lion's Arch, trying to craft some Raspberry Peach Compote to level up both cooking and myself (I'd recently discovered that crafting gives so many levels). I had the Raspberries, I had the Sugar.

    But for the life of me, I couldn't find the peaches.

    Not on the trading post, not on the cooking vendor, no where. I was thinking to myself "where the hell could I find these peaches?" I asked my guildmates and an elementalist named Declan said he had some, but they were account bound. I was cursing to myself in my head, and in a mode of desperation, opened the wiki. I clicked on "Peaches in Bulk" and discovered that 2 of the vendors selling them don't exist, 1 was a bazaar vendor, and the last one (the one I eventually went to) was a Heart Vendor in the Apostate Wastes of Fireheart Rise, a level 60-70 area that my level 40 thief was definitely not prepared for. I had done higher level zones before, but nothing like 20 levels above where I was.

    I told my guildies that I had to go all the way to Fireheart Rise, and Declan offered to guide me there. I accepted, of course. Another guildie who I don't remember the full name of, I'll call him Taa, was a high 30s Guardian who also offered to join for fun. We all met up in Lion's Arch and went into the Plains of Ashford.

    The group and I went up into Diessa Plateau, where we were trying to find a way into Fireheart Rise. I checked the wiki, and discovered that we couldn't get into Fireheart Rise directly through Diessa Plateau, instead having to backtrack through the Plains of Ashford and take a detour through the Iron Marches. Somewhere around this time we'd add our fourth member to this group, a Scrapper named Nem the Alien, who had a history with Declan. He decided to take the reigns of leader of the group. We killed a few trash mobs, and went on our merry way to the Iron Marches.

    This is where shit starts hitting the fan.

    We were going through the Iron Marches, killing mobs. The thing was though, I was doing absolutely zero damage to the mobs, Taa and I was getting one or two shot by them, serves me right for going on this journey, but the peaches were gonna be worth it. It was around here where the mordrem bosses spawned, and was also the place where Nem the Alien and Declan met. We decided to try to kill the bosses

    It did not go well.

    It was a high level area by default, and the bosses made it even worse. Even Declan was getting bursted by the boss's bull abilities. I grabbed a flamethrower and tried to kill the tendrils, but my efforts were for naught as we failed the boss. We tried another Mordrem Boss, it was even worse. Tendrils burst out of the ground and killed Taa and I, sometimes even Declan in seconds, and it felt futile to try anything. Nem the Alien was a scrapper with mobs near him, so he couldn't die, but he had to spend most of his time ressing us. We failed this boss too, and Taa decided that this journey wasn't for him at this time and left the group, leaving only Declan, Nem, and Me.

    We ran through the mobs in the Iron Marches, me switching to my shortbow because it did a bit more damage and gave me more escapability with its Q, and eventually we got to the waypoint and portal we needed to get to: Bulwark Waypoint. As the people say, "We're in the endgame now."

    But we weren't out of hell yet, as qute possibly the worst part of the Peach Journey was about to come. A dynamic event that involved firefighting popped up, and we tried to do it.

    That was a worse idea than the Mordrem bosses.

    It turned out that the fires were caused by a seemingly infinite wall of Embers that we tried to fight through, but failed. The Embers could insta-kill me and I had barely enough time to get out of it. Around this time, I switched my build to add more mobility with the ground target extra shadowstep, the stealth cleanse/heal, and the blind/stealth abilities, which came in handy after we escaped this hell.

    It was a while before we realized we couldn't finish this event, and I decided to shadowstep the hell away from this event. I was successful in my attempts, and we were closer than ever to the peach prize.

    Now it was just a beeline to the Apostate Wastes

    We ran straight through into the Pig Iron Mines, which took a long time because there were mobs and breakable walls that I just could not do enough damage to. Buloh Crossing was the same, a lot of mobs, but we cleared them out.

    Finally, we had arrived to the Apostate Wastes. We were closer than ever.

    The Apostate Wastes were big with a lot of trash mobs that could easily burst me, but with my new build I was able to zip by and weave through both Flame Legion and bestial mobs. It took a while, but we were finally around the area that had the peaches, but we couldn't find the tribe that sold them. It was the Nrocroc tribe, and we were hurrying to try and find them We found the Tarstars, we found the WupWups, but eventually, Nem finally found the Nrocrocs.

    We're almost there, almost to Peach salvation

    But first, the heart. There were two objectives for this heart: Kill black bears and gather prickleberries. Declan and Nem helped me get the black bears, and a funny sequence occured where I got oneshot by a black bear cub. I also was gathering prickleberries in the meantime.

    After a few minutes of mob hunting and prickleberry gathering, I was confident that I had enough. I walked up to the Nrocroc chief and gave him the prickleberries...

    HALLELUJAH IT WAS ENOUGH!!! IT WAS ENOUGH!!!

    I was so elated that I had finally gotten the peaches, a process that also gave me 5 whole levels, and immediately bought what equaled 150 of them. I gave the most well deserved thanks to both Nem and Declan, and headed back to Lion's Arch with my peaches. I crafted my Raspberry Peach Compote, made loaves of Raspberry Peach bread with that Compote, and went on with crafting.

    TL;DR, Read the Story!!! It's so much better when you read it, but if you actually want it...

    I went on a long journey with friendly guildmates to find some peaches, died a lot along the way, but eventaully secured the bag and had a blast along the way while also gaining levels.

    [EU] New to raids and want to give them a shot? Or maybe you're interested in teaching/commanding raids? Raid Training Initiative [RTI] is looking for more members!

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 04:29 PM PDT

    Hey hey. I'm the leader of the RTI (Raid Training Initiative) community, one of the largest EU guilds for getting into PvE raids in Guild Wars 2. You may also know us as the people that made that massive list of beginner-friendly raiding PoVs that is still getting updated to this day.

    Since we've been growing rapidly over the past few months, we've been working very hard to make sweeping changes to the way we organise raids to make things as simple and accessible to people as possible. As of today, our community is now entirely Discord-based, which makes the process of applying and signing up for our raids dead simple. As long as you have a raid-ready build, all you need to do is press a button and fill in a 2-minute application form to start raiding.

    So, if you always thought that PvE raids might be something you'd enjoy and want to experience them without having to deal with the impossible catch-22 requirements, toxicity, downtime, and unpleasantness of raid LFG, then this is the community for you. We have many commanders that organise raids any time any day, and there is no expectation for you to join on any regular basis - just sign up when you're able and willing to raid with us!

    We're also ESPECIALLY looking for people that are experienced with raids and are interested in commanding and teaching new players in our guild. If you have any interest in doing this, sign up to the guild and mention this in your application form and we will get in touch.

    If any of this sounds interesting to you, go ahead and join our Discord from the below link:

    JOIN HERE

    All people are welcome, even if you don't plan on joining RTI - our Discord has a lot of guides and resources and lively chat channels that are open to everyone. If you're interested in joining our raids, give a read through the #welcome, #rules, and #join_us channels to learn how to apply to RTI.

    Why there are so many Charr plot in the Jormag story arc and Norn got pushed aside?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 03:20 PM PDT

    Shouldn't the Jormag arc focused on Norn, Kodan and Jotun? What the heck is with all the Charr stuff.

    We got a lot to see about Son of Svanir and the Lost Spirits. Jotun/Kodan lore could also be explored. There are so many rich plot setup in the personal story for Jormag and most of them are simply discarded in Icebrood Saga.

    Submit a screenshot of your character and I will draw it poorly on my phone. (v. 2.0)

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:04 AM PDT

    It's another slow day at work, I've sat at the computer for the last 3 hours and nothing has come in, so if you post a screenshot of your character, I'll send you a very poorly drawn interpretation back. Might have to take breaks if work actually comes in, though. See the previous thread for some examples of my incredible work. Please help me pass this day faster.

    All drawings are done with my finger on an app called Tayasui Sketches Pro.

    EDIT: You guys are great! My shift has ended, but if I'm bored I'll get around to whatever ones are posted at some point. Thanks for all the fun! Definitely made the second half of today go by much quicker. Here's an album with all the doodles in it so far, being updated as I go.

    Would anyone here be interested in having their character immortalized via an epic cinematic "movie trailer" style montage of their character on Youtube?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 05:31 PM PDT

    Hi friends,

    Back in 2016, I got an idea to immortalize my GW2 family of characters via making an epic trailer video of each one.

    I made a montage video of my main character, Aurora Dragonheart as I was leveling which you can find here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Iglf2mRhy0 and subsequently made a Youtube channel called "Legends of Tyria" with the intention of making more videos of all my alt characters.

    This was my very first ever attempt at using Adobe Premiere and video editing in general so it did not turn out amazing, and my setup wasn't that great in terms of hardware so the quality could have been way better.

    However, for my first attempt, I felt it came out pretty cool considering I had no idea what I was really doing but I did achieve my goal of making my main look like she was kicking some serious ass! I also made a remix version on the same channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEpGBxbHMXg

    Unfortunately, health and IRL issues didn't allow me to continue at the time so I shelved the idea after making that first video. I was always a bit sad that I didn't make any more and the idea always stayed with me.

    Covid isn't exactly making it any easier now either but the dream hasn't died!

    Recently I got a shower thought about going back to that but also thought about maybe getting other characters on there as well ones that aren't mine and create a Youtube database of all the Legendary heroes of Tyria.

    So having said that...Would any of you guys or gals be interested in having me make a similar montage of your character and put in on my channel so you could have a memory of your main or alt?

    I know people do art commissions here so has anyone tried video or offered something similar to what I am proposing?

    Obviously there are some logistical issues to overcome as I don't have and can never have access to your account nor would I want to in order to capture video.

    You would have to capture the video clips and send them to me one at a time over like a week or 2 or however long. It's really easy as they need to only be a few seconds long.

    So the quality and length depend on your hardware but if you run Nvidia video cards and have the gforce experience for example you can just press 1 button and record yourself playing. If not there is always OBS or Fraps or similar capture tools.

    I would have to do a short zoom with you or create a how-to video or pdf guide on how to capture video on your end, how to set up your in-game camera in settings, and how to send me the files (probably via my google drive or your dropbox or whatever cloud storage is most appropriate). It's not super hard.

    Heck, you could do this yourself if you have Premiere or Davinci Resolve.

    Still, I would love to put this up on my channel at some point to have a central place for all the heroes of Tyria. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzPvd9wALgijAwYy0suH7sQ

    The goal would be to immortalize your character so that you can always fondly look at them and reminisce. I look at my Aurora video from time to time and it always puts a smile on my face because she was my first!

    I would take all your footage you submit and cut it and edit it into a montage like the one I linked for my character. The more of these I would do the better they probably would become over time.

    I will pick some appropriate epic music to go along with it or use the game soundtrack audio since it's beautiful as well.

    You get to pick whatever you want to record, what zones, what moments you want to remember as you would have to do the actual video capture on your end. However, I would pick what I like or feel is appropriate and create a piece of video cinematic trailer art out of it which would be anywhere from 60 sec or 2 or 3 min long! (like a movie trailer for your character).

    What are your thoughts on something like this on having a Legends of Tyria channel for your characters? Do you think its a good idea?

    Either way, I will probably make a video of all 20 of my alts going forward, but it would be nice to have others on there as well eventually. Of course, it's going to take some time for each one as making a video takes a few days to a week of time.

    I just thought it would be a cool way to do something creative in the game I love and to immortalize our characters.

    p.s. yes, my fashion wars kind of sucked in that video (I like it but I dint't have a lot of stuff) and I have no legendaries even today, as I was and am in-game poor and I was still clearing story but actually not looking like a disco ball glow stick made it feel more grounded.

    Starting Guild Wars 2

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 07:15 AM PDT

    Hi all, I played GW2 during beta and loved it, but never played it after. I just bought it and want to drive into PvE, but I'm not sure where to start. I've been watching some videos online but maybe you can put me on my path quickly:

    I really like the concept of Mesmer but I'm on a big stealth rogue archetype kick right now so I was thinking of playing thief (so I'm not really feeling the caster vibe). I don't want to use guns, though, (I like medieval fantasy style), so I'm not sure if only a bow is viable for my ranged weapon. I do like the idea of a glaive/staff for thief and it looks like "daredevil" thief does well late game, but I'm brand new so I don't know what to do while leveling with no gear.

    There's my disorganized thought process. If you can make sense of it, what do you recommend and is there a guide you can point me toward?

    Thank you.

    Help. Game pauses when in combat fighting

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 07:03 AM PDT

    Hello GW2 humans,

    When I am playing GW2, during combat after a few attacks the game and everything is still working, graphic animations, etc going but otherwise the game does not take any input. This happens even when fighting open world few enemies found anywhere. For example, will do a few attack, heal, etc and then I cannot do anything for 3-7 seconds. I am not under any conditions, commands are not on cool down. Not a beginner. Is there a keyboard binding or setting or something that could cause this?
