A shout out to my Map Squad Yesterday, Thank You

    Posted: 25 May 2020 09:28 AM PDT

TLDR: Thank you guys for making one of my worst runs as a com one of the best most fun runs I've ever done.

So I did a big HoT Map run on EU yesterday. The squad was one of the very best groups I've run through the jungle, but I wasn't on my A game. Couldn't keep my ports off cooldown, fat fingered here and there, forgetting this or that, missed timing windows.... Heck, dropping from Flyers in VB down to the Treasure Mushroom I left from the wrong spot and had to call the WP to try it again. Heck at one point they had to wait on me because I forgot to swap from a parked toon and need my main mesmer before we did Chak Driver. I missed the VB dive, haven't missed that in literally over the last 50+ tries. It was the worst personal performance I've had running this event. Normally I'm pretty good at making my runs seamless clockwork, and this run was mistake after fat finger after mistake. Just one of those days I guess.

Yet my squad was supportive, helpful and even appreciative. They did a great job of helping me keep the tail short. Patient beyond belief while we waited on my port cooldowns, 'That's OK' when I forgot to get an MP and Golden Chicken and we had to back track, no complainers about too slow, too fast, no being demanding, selfish or entitled whispers... They were smooth and on top of it even when I wasn't.

It was one of my worst runs as a tag yet it one of my favorite runs as a commander. Thank you guys, you made what normally would have been a bad day into a great memory.

The Weekly Map Recap, Week 11 - Lornar's Pass

    Posted: 24 May 2020 02:06 PM PDT

Welcome to the Weekly Map Recap, a series where we will look back at one map in the game each week. We'll look with a critical eye at how each map represents its theme, proves faithful to its lore, and implements its design. We'll see how effective its gameplay is, whether the art holds up, and the forecast for the map's long term retention. With 51 maps to date, it'll be quite the journey!

Links to the previous entries in a reply at the bottom!

    11 of 51 - Lornar's Pass - Level 25-40

Lornar's Pass is tied with Gendarran Fields as the map with the most connected maps, at six. Unlike Gendarran Fields though, Lornar's Pass is all about mystery. While up to this point map order has been pretty straightforward, things start to get messy around this map. It's going to depend on Order choice. While Lornar's Pass is the natural 3rd map thematically for Norn players, and this is supported by the third chapter of their personal story, it's highly likely that those players would choose either the Order of Whispers or the Vigil after that. These choices will lead to different map prompts from the personal story steps.

    Theme/Concept - 7/10

Lornar's Pass is focused on the Durmand Priory, and the map is thematically focused around that organization. The Priory is all about exploration and delving into lore secrets. That is well represented both on this map and the next, Dredgehaunt Cliffs.

There are caverns and lost civilizations everywhere. Unexplained phenomena - like the Fleshreavers or Steam Creatures - abound. Entrances to the Mists are found on this map, along with one of the largest, best hidden jumping puzzles - Griffonrook Run. I still remember when the Run wasn't common knowledge, and folks spreading information about it on reddit and the forums.

    Lore - 9/10

The Durmand Priory has some of the best lore in GW2, since the 'Movement of the World' article in PCGamer in 2007. The idea of a refuge of lore that was one of the few beacons of civilization left in the world was one of the most engaging bits in that article.

Now, ultimately, the Orders had a reduced role in the game than implied in those early articles and in pre-release information. The original idea was that the Orders would represent legitimately different approaches to how to deal with the Elder Dragons. The Order of Whispers would want to put them back to sleep, the Durmand Priory communicate with them, and the Vigil kill them.

But the core idea that the Durmand Priory is constantly looking for alternate solutions is present here.

The other major element lore-wise is of course the GW1 similarity. Lornar's Pass in GW1 is a long, snakey zone with an entrance portal to the Underworld at a Statue of Grenth. All of that is here.

    Design - 8/10

This map is designed very much to evoke the sense of winding paths that the GW1 map had quite literally. Paths go above and under each other, winding around mountains in sometimes slightly frustrating ways. It can be difficult to get where you want to go. But all of that is thematic.

The Durmand Priory is the 'weenie' of the map - a design term used by theme park 'Imagineers' to describe a setpiece that you look forward to on the horizon (like the famous Disneyland castle). There is an appropriate amount of trek that you need to do to get up to the Priory.

Interestingly, this map had a bit of a small remodel during Season 1. Scarlet's Lab was placed beneath the Durmand Priory and the Marionette fight was placed in the Southeast corner.

    Gameplay - 6/10

In general, the gameplay on the map is nothing special. With one exception - during the Marionette fight in Season 1 - the map is fairly standard. The Griffonrook Run jumping puzzle really is standout in terms of jumping puzzle design. While it can be frustrating given its length, it's quite intricate and it has unique mechanics. Scarlet's Lab itself is still accessible, and has some interesting mini-mini-dungeon elements.

There aren't really any meta events on this map, really. There are larger event chains that are labeled as metas, but they're no different than a basic series of events.

    Art - 8/10

Lornar's Pass is really quite striking. A lot of that comes down to the Durmand Priory itself. The structure and its art assets, lighting, and setting are some of the best environmental work in the whole game - including the post-release content.

There are other attractive elements in the map. The entrance to the Underworld is one, and Griffonrook Run itself is a really strong use of vertical environmental design for the vanilla game.

    Long Term/Retention - 6/10

Like the other maps surrounding Lion's Arch, Lornar's Pass had a heyday of activity during Season 1. It was more, comparatively, than Gendarran Fields or Bloodtide Coast because of the Marionette and the Lab.

I want to emphasize, actually, how big of a hit the Marionette was. Up to that point there had been some strong complaints about the content in Living World Season 1. While there were some hits, Living World Season 1 was lacking in content for those looking for something a bit meatier.

The two real 'dungeons' of the season, the Molten Alliance dungeon and the Aetherblade dungeon, were generally well received (though considered overlong and with frustrating reward structure). Larger public events like the Tower of Nightmares and the Queens Jubilee were viewed as a lootfest on par with Halloween, but not particularly 'engaging'.

The Marionette combined the best of both of those content types. It was public, but built in large bosses like a dungeon AND smaller fights like the duels in Queen's Jubilee. It was the blueprint of all public bossfights to come, most clearly the Mordrem Vinewrath in the Silverwastes, but also Triple Trouble and the remake of Tequatl. Without the Marionette, open world bosses wouldn't be what they grew to become in HoT.

That said, Lornar's Pass doesn't have a lot going for it these days. Many folks like to hang out at the Durmand Priory because it has some services and is just cool. It's right next to Lion's Arch, so if you need other services you can hop right over. Other than that, I'm not aware of much else that keeps folks coming back beyond the standard story and progression.

    Overall - 7/10

I've come around on Lornar's Pass. It's a bit of an uneven map - much of it blends in with Dredgehaunt Cliffs in my memory. I can never remember which Dredge tunnels are which.

But the highs on this map are really very high. Seeing Ogden Stonehealer's hut beneath the Priory for the first time was a wonderful moment as a GW1 fan. Seeing the Priory for the first time in the distance, even more astonishing.

In the end, I think the high points outweigh the bland lows. It's a great map with some great memories - I just wish the Marionette was still around.

    -----------------

That's it for today! Next week, we'll be headed to Fields of Ruin.

What do you think of today's map? Any fond memories, or strong complaints? How well do you think this map stands up in comparison to all the others?

Question abour making money with RIBA loot

    Posted: 25 May 2020 08:29 AM PDT

    Hello,

I recently started to do RIBA when I feel like it since I'm working on a legendary and don't have too much gold on my hand. I did 1 run and wanted to make money from the results to get a feel how it works.

I looked at the RIBA tool website and it said to open the loot bags on either between 24-30 or 49-53. I have a character on 24 so I used that. But I don't see how I make money by doing this since the armor pieces I get only sell for 4 g max (most for less) in the auction house and when I salvage them I get 1 iron ore which is worth around 1,4 silver. Am I using the website wrong? The expected value is higher around level 50 but it's so minimal (right now it's even higher -> 24: 4,16 to 50: 3,84)

Can someone maybe explain how to read the table for someone who is pretty new to this? :)

What legendary weapon do you use for Thief? both aesthetics and usage wise

    Posted: 25 May 2020 08:04 AM PDT

as someone who mains staff Daredevil, I have a lot of legendary weapons to choose from for that character. but the problem is that none of the legendary weapons seems to fit. for example: Nevermore definitely looks like a ranged weapon and the Bifrost's rainbow when stowed isn't great for a sneaky assassin vibe of thief. and also, Claw of the Khan-Ur's Charr-theme animations don't fit my Sylvari at all, either.

I'm interested in your cases, though! what legendary weapons are your core Thieves or Daredevils using?

Imagine if there was no rewards in entire game. No ap, no gold, no skins. What content would you still play?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 05:12 PM PDT

Just a shower thought that I deemed worthy of posting. In my example, as a wvw player I already play mostly unrewarded but it's fine since it's fun! That's why people still play wvw despite its glaring issues. It's a very well designed piece of content made to last. Rewards are tricky because they might eventually lose value (got all the ap, unlocked all skins etc), rendering the linked content obsolete. So what else ingame is ACTUALLY good without rewards? What's intrinsically rewarding to you personally, so that you'd randomly come back just for the hell of it?

Banned for using two simple words : "Lazy balancing"

    Posted: 25 May 2020 08:45 AM PDT

And that's it really...didn't offend anybody, didn't use any inappropriate language and used a well constructed post right on the points I have wanted to explain, only used the words "lazy balancing" to explain what was omitted from last balance patch. I didn't use any derogatory term, didn't belittle anybody or name any dev in my post..and yet I get banned without warning.

This is really absurd and even if you email them..they refuse to give any explanation, it's not the ban that bothers me...it's the action, no valid reasoning whatsoever because I did not brake any rule.

WvW Kill tagging and Loot Bag

    Posted: 25 May 2020 08:11 AM PDT

Can we make it if you are 600 range to your squad member, what ever they tag (hit/dmg) you also get it (tag/exp/loot) ? As i enjoy playing support now. Which is really fun, i hate the fact that i barely get anything from this runs. Though my dps does send me half of their loot. The system is just soo Pepega.

(also same with Ram/Catapult) only players who are using the siege gets the exp from destroying the gate/wall....

I know that wvw doesnt get much love in updates so i aint really hoping much..... No one even ask/wanted warclaw. Thats how detach they are from wvw

    About vegan guilds.

    Posted: 25 May 2020 06:57 AM PDT

I only recently discovered there are specifically vegan guilds in the game and after making the token jokes like linking my season 3 hound mantle in the chat and some ascended beef in the chat, I've been wondering. How do they do it? Do they simply not craft... Pretty much anything? Can they get through the HoT story without harvesting chak enzyme? There are so many things a vegan couldn't possibly achieve in Tyria that it's mind-blowing, we hunt and kill beasts for their pelts, blood, fang, scales... How could they craft gear? HOW!?

If any members of the vegan guilds could clarify, I'm just terribly curious.

    Question

    Posted: 25 May 2020 06:45 AM PDT

The endless clothing tonics you can buy. Even though the description says you cannot fight, don't they get transferred to the wardrobe tab now? So you can essentially fight with the town clothes etc?
