Missing Trahearne, will it get better?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 11:20 AM PDT

I am a firs time player, so please no spoilers.

I have been really invested in the whole story, just finished Heart of Thorns and I am still feeling a little empty from the loss of Trahearne, I have read that he was not very popular with the player base as he "stole the spotlight" from the player character, but I didn't feel like that at all, and just giving me the spotlight because I am the player, wouldn't feel right to me.

I was more than happy with being second in command.

What bothered me was when I was suddenly stuck with the guys from Dragon's watch, constantly goofing around, calling me Boss, I don't really care about them, especially Taimi annoys me. Sorry.

Especially since I could've been there to help Destiny's Edge and Trahearne much faster had Taimi and the others not forced me to go check out other stuff that ended up pointless.

I am about to jump back into the story again and.. .please tell me I am not stuck with that group forever.

I just do not care about them whatsoever, the characters don't appeal to me, I would much rather have Logan or Laranthir on my side instead, without calling me "Boss".

Please tell me it gets better.

What do you think the key feature of the next expansion will be ?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 04:45 AM PDT

I think they will hit us with the underwater rework. This is the only area "nearly" untouched in term of movement (swimming infusion *cough* *cough*) . HoT brough the gliding mechanics adding verticality to the maps, maguuma was a freaking maze. PoF mount, letting them do bigger maps, with "empty" which fit well the desert.

I know the expansion was teased to be in cantha, that doesn't mean we'll have all cantha at once. PoF brought half of elona, LS4 filled up the missing location.

If they manage to rework underwater content to be smoother, I would be happy with it as a key feature.

    DPS Meter?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 07:48 AM PDT

I know when I was raiding actively a couple of years ago or however long, DPS meters were very much "don't ask, don't tell." Seemed like it was alright to use them so long as you didn't make it into a problem (such as harassing other players about their DPS).

Is this still the case? Am I safe to use a DPS meter?

I've just returned to the game recently and want to help my new guild with progressing through raids since it is all their first times doing so. A big part of that on my end will be monitoring my own DPS, and also offering to tell others theirs. I also would hope to offer the guild officers a kind of big picture "I think we're lacking DPS in this phase" or "I think our DPS is fine so it's likely just mechanics here," without calling out any specific players unless those players ask how they're doing.

If DPS meters are still "allowed," what is the best one right now that people find to be trustworthy and reliable?

    Thanks!

The Weekly Map Recap, Week 10 - Gendarran Fields

    Posted: 17 May 2020 01:31 PM PDT

Welcome to the Weekly Map Recap, a series where we will look back at one map in the game each week. We'll look with a critical eye at how each map represents its theme, proves faithful to its lore, and implements its design. We'll see how effective its gameplay is, whether the art holds up, and the forecast for the map's long term retention. With 51 maps to date, it'll be quite the journey!

Links to the previous entries in a reply at the bottom!

    10 of 51 - Gendarran Fields - Level 25-35

Hi there folks! Bit of a short two week break there, but we're back at it again! I'm trying to figure out a sustainable pace - perhaps we'll start doing 10 weeks and then two weeks off or something like that. Anyhow, on to the map!

Gendarran Fields is a real crossroads - connected to no less than seven maps at the heart of core Tyria. Given that the personal story converges around Lion's Arch starting in the 30s, this map serves as a kind of meeting point of the different leveling paths across the map.

That 'central' position shows, too - it's awash with different cultures, styles, and landscapes.

    Theme/Concept - 6/10

Gendarran Fields, like I mentioned above, is definitely intended to be a map that evokes crossroads, trade, and mixing cultures. Even the loading screen shows this: a caravan crossing presumably to Lion's Arch.

This is conveyed very well - especially back when the architecture of the Lion's Arch gate resembled nothing less than a bunch of different ships stacked together. The npcs on the map are all kinds, all races. They talk about this if you ask them. You can fight pirates, visit a quaggan shrine to Melandru, fight in a norn arena, and plunder a crypt. There's enormous variety.

    Lore - 7/10

Gendarran Fields is largely a combination of two maps from the first game, 'Nebo Terrace' and 'North Kryta Province'. For Nebo, the name is most of what remains - the architecture and surrounding climate and such is fairly different. Although we haven't mentioned it so far in this series, the Krytans themselves are fairly different as well: they were dark skinned and covered in 'exotic' tattoos. Now, as I've mentioned for other Kryta maps, the flavor is generally Western European.

The overall thematic elements of GW1's Kryta are largely here, though. The Tengu that were so common are gone, but the undead and pirates were definitely present in this area previously. Centaurs, too.

Ascalon Settlement is the hub of lore in this zone. It has graveyards that reference the first game, ambient dialogue that references it, and generally mimics the architecture of old Ascalon. It's nice to see that a settlement that the players helped set up in the first game is thriving.

During Living World Season 1, a minor change was made on this map by Scarlet Briar - but it hasn't left any lasting mark that you can find lore-wise.

    Design - 6/10

As I said above, Gendarran Fields has a lot of variety. Its design overall encourages exploration, with water features and caves splitting up a lot of the action to create 'pockets' of activity. This is especially impressive for a map that is, after all, primarily rolling fields. The verticality with the hills of settlements and the trenches of rivers helps to reduce the sense that there is any flatness.

Interestingly, the levels across the map start lower on the sides and get higher towards the center, around the pirate area and Applenook (Side note - Applenook was used heavily for early press events as an example of the dynamic event system). This design means again that the map is very open to exploration right from the get-go - the edges are all generally of slightly lower level, and the interior is of higher level, so there's free movement around the map.

The map does have a meta, without a world boss. Given that the map is so central, it does strike me as odd that there's no boss. The meta itself is engaging though, with a lot of different success/failed states and back-and-forth attacks that can introduce variety.

This is also the first map that we've come across that contains an Order base, the Vigil Keep. Although it seems there is opportunity here for large gatherings of players, I have never seen large crowds here after the first year of the game. The Keep had its heyday when players were temporarily banned from Lion's Arch during Living World Season 1 - the Keep was the 'default' Order base, the other being the Durmand Priory.

    Gameplay - 7/10

The name of the game here, again, is variety. Although most of it is very 'attack/defend' focused, the map has a large number of settlements and buildings that really can be taken by enemies and cause trouble for everyone on the map. Combine those events with a lot of other activities (the aforementioned crypt min-dungeon, norn gladiators, beetle race, and jumping puzzles) and you've got a stew goin'.

Special mention to the 'Not So Secret' jumping puzzle, one of the few pieces of permanent content added from Living World Season 1. It's one of the toughest jumping puzzles in the Vanilla game, and a source of gratitude for porting Mesmers everywhere.

Shoutout as well to the Coalescence event - a group event which is regularly run by players to this day, and often run on Gendarran because of ease of navigation around the map.

    Art - 6/10

In terms of art, the map is a bit of a mish-mash. It's certainly not as cohesive as any of the starter maps or a more focused map like Harathi Hinterlands or any of the Orrian maps. But again, that's sort of the point. I struggle on whether that should count against it.

In general, the art gets across the theme effectively, and perhaps that's the primary thing we should ask of it. Although I don't personally like the art direction of the redone Lion's Arch post-Season 1, that style sticks out and only adds to the sense of hodgepodge that a crossroads like this should evoke.

Both Ascalon Settlement and the Vigil Keep are standout artistic elements here. They are large in scale and really get that scale across like few things in the Vanilla game do, outside of the Shiverpeaks. Additionally, the Not So Secret jumping puzzle is one of the few places we can find the Aetherblade art style left in the game.

    Long Term/Retention - 5/10

Gendarran Fields is not doing as well as it once was. Near the beginning of the game, the most common way to get around the map without spending your low-level coppers on waypoint fees was to go to the PvP lobby and then hop to Lion's Arch. From Lion's Arch, you would jump via Asura Gate to whatever city was closest to where you wanted to go. Naturally, that made Lion's Arch the real 'hub' of the game in a way that it hasn't quite retained to this day.

Gendarran Fields got to keep some of that population for itself just by the law of averages. People would walk through Gendarran Fields to get to other maps, do material collecting runs, or to access story missions.

These days, Lion's Arch is not so key. Especially following Path of Fire, the city is less of the central hub, and Gendarran Fields has a lower population as a result. The Beetle Race, seasonal events, personal story, and the Coalescence event are the main sources of retention. It's certainly not doing as poorly as some maps, but not as well as it used to.

    Overall - 6/10

Gendarran Fields represents the 'core' Kryta map of the Prophecies campaign - much changed. In some ways it's the map that Queensdale wishes it could be, showing towns under siege and some interesting variance in events, puzzles, and secrets. Visually, it made more sense before Lion's Arch was rebuilt.

    -----------

That's it for today! Next week, we'll be headed to Lornar's Pass.

What do you think of today's map? Any fond memories, or strong complaints? How well do you think this map stands up in comparison to all the others?

Ranger Pets in the Woodland Cascades

    Posted: 17 May 2020 05:00 PM PDT

Historically, we've never gotten new Ranger pets with Living World releases, but since we're going to the Woodland Cascades in the next episode of the Icebrood Saga (which is supposed to be "expansion" worthy, though whether or not it's living up to that moniker is... questionable) I would really like to see Mantid and Mandragor pets.

I know that they both first appeared in Factions and Nightfall (respectively), but the place I connect them to the most is Varajar Fells and Grothmar Wardowns from EotN. Even though we didn't get them in Grothmar, the new map would be the perfect place to introduce them. Since HoT and PoF both introduced new pets, I would argue that this is absolutely an expansion specific feature.

Am I the only one really hoping we don't have to wait for the Cantha Expac for new ranger pets? What do y'all think? Is this something you'd like to see too?
