As per our updated rules page:

    Low effort posts

Low effort/value posts that don't bring any value as a topic to the subreddit can be removed if moderators deem that the post doesn't meet the quality required. These also include posts that reply to a topic on another thread that could just have been a comment on that topic. Posts that the community approves of via upvotes may be allowed even if considered low effort and will be tagged as fluff. These decisions are at the moderators discretion and posts may be allowed or removed based on the quality of the thread in question.

Low effort/value posts include subjects such as:

    • Questions too simple for their own thread.
    • Frequently asked questions.
    • Questions too specific for general playerbase to find useful.
    • Screenshots taken from camera. Use Print Screen button to save game capture.
    • Cross posts from other subs that are not directly related to Guild Wars 2.
    • Photos, Images, Memes that do not directly relate to Guild Wars 2.
      • For example generic gaming memes or photos of weather or real life locations.

Question for those who have Exordium

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 08:44 AM PDT

Looking at Wiki, the Exordium seems like a really neat legendary with it changing shapes based on skills.

However, when I looked at some videos, I found it hard to notice or see unless they put in slow playback.

So my question to those of you who have it is do you notice it changing shape just playing regularly?

If you can't really see it or notice when playing regularly, do you regret making it? Why or why not?

The Weekly Map Recap - Week 7, Diessa Plateau

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 12:32 PM PDT

Welcome to the Weekly Map Recap, a series where we will look back at one map in the game each week. We'll look with a critical eye at how each map represents its theme, proves faithful to its lore, and implements its design. We'll see how effective its gameplay is, whether the art holds up, and the forecast for the map's long term retention. With 51 maps to date, it'll be quite the journey!

Links to the previous entries in a reply at the bottom!

    7 of 51 - Diessa Plateau - Level 15-25

The natural second map for charr players, Diessa Plateau is a map of great variety. It contains an enormous number of different things to do - many of which feature unique or unusual gameplay. It has mysterious tombs to plunder, festivals to celebrate, and walls to climb.

    Theme/Concept - 5/10

Diessa Plateau's theme seems to be 'heartland' - or some approximation of it. The plateau is the closest we get in the vanilla game to a pastoral 'home' of the charr. The village of Nolan or Butcher's Block gives us among the closest we get to charr in peacetime.

Perhaps a secondary theme we might see would be 'adventure'? The map contains an awful lot of hidden treasures and activities. The "strawberry patch' in Nolan, or the depths of the Font of Rhand are both examples of this. The map has two jumping puzzles and a number of strange features - including the cattlepult!

Overall, it's not a super standout or evocative theme. But as a placid heartland, maybe it doesn't need a super dramatic theme.

    Lore - 8/10

Like many of the Ascalon maps, Diessa is rich with history. The map corresponds with Diessa Lowlands in GW1 - and while it's unclear how Lowlands changed into a Plateau, the rest matches well. Nolani Academy has become the town of Nolan. The Grendich ruins are here, all that is left of the original Courthouse. The layout of the Flame Legion base even matches the Flame Temple Corridor placement in the northeast of the map. Nice touch adding tar elementals in that area; those are incredibly common enemies in the GW1 map.

While it's not quite a 1:1 like parts of Iron Marches will turn out to be, it's still a close fit. And just like the other Ascalon maps, the changes between GW1 and GW2 provoke really interesting questions.

For example, Nolan is a really lovely town in GW2. Is the 'charr occupation' so bad if it produces a lovely garden town like that?

    Design - 7/10

Diessa Plateau is a very 'open' map, but has enough variation in terrain features to avoid becoming too flat. This is accomplished largely with the placement of clusters of forests, cliffs, caverns, and water features. The rock formations that are placed are more limited in size here than in Plains of Ashford, again inviting a more 'open' feeling.

Generally, there is a separation between the open flatlands and the 'borders'. Along the edges of Diessa Plateau are many of the more interesting bits - hidden enemy camps, jumping puzzles, exploration dungeons. In the middle are the hearts and events - many of which are unusual in nature, featuring lots of transformations.

Players are intended to move generally from west to east - and more directly southwest to northeast. One of the main points against the map is that it's a dead end in terms of progression. There are no higher-level exits for this map. Players are intended, I assume, to move back through the Black Citadel and Plains of Ashford and Blazeridge Steppes (a higher level zone!) to Fields of Ruin. Very awkward.

Thinking about how Diessa Plateau relates to later design trends, I find it most closely resembles later 'grab-bag' designs, namely Path of Fire maps as opposed to more laser-focused HoT designs. Especially given how open it is, it feels very PoF.

    Gameplay - 8/10

As mentioned above, the map contains an enormous variety of gameplay elements.

First, it contains a high number of minor 'metas' for an early map. These involve some strong area control elements that actively impact the towns on the map. Special mention here should go to the giant that attacks Nageling - while not a meta per se, it is one of the most exciting early challenges one can find in the vanilla game. It's a tough event, and that's pretty unusual.

Then there are all of the events and renown hearts. The map contains a high number of unusual events and situations. Where else in the game can you celebrate a festival dealing entirely with meat? Or turn into a cow and teach your fellow bovines your mooooves? Or disguise yourself as two competing 'evil' factions, and trick them into fighting each other?

Finally, we've got a lot of exploration activities on the map. The hidden strawberry patch in Nolan and the Font of Rhand are both real standouts in the vanilla game - I can remember them blowing minds when folks were first playing the game. The Font of Rhand itself has always struck me as a strong early example of the vanilla emphasis on exploration in map design. There are two jumping puzzles and a beetle race, to boot!

    Art - 7/10

Diessa Plateau keeps up the trend of gorgeous Ascalon maps. Along with the normal trees and ruins, you get some assets from the Shiverpeaks on this map - dredge excavations and mountain peaks.

The different towns on this map are impressive in how they each create their own visual identities. Nolan is very visually distinct from Bulliyak Arsenal. Areas like the Font of Rhand are replicated nowhere else in the game.

In fact, if we look at the most recent Ascalon map - Grothmar Valley - my sense is it takes most of its GW2 design inspiration from Diessa.

    Long Term/Retention - 3/10

Diessa has sadly limited retention for such an interesting map. It had a heyday during Season 1, with Flame and Frost - the entrance to the temporary dungeon Molten Facility was sometimes on this map.

Beyond that and the beetle race, there hasn't been that much here. Given the confusing nature of progression through Ascalon and the relative unpopularity of new charr characters, this map even has a low level retention for a second map.

    Overall - 7/10

Diessa Plateau is another home run of a vanilla map for me. It contains all the things that I love about vanilla early game maps, and it's another point for Ascalon as the best vanilla 'region'. It's got a great balance of exploration, mysteries, puzzles, and combat. It's got some fun events and strong progression. The only problem is that it's a complete dead-end: there's no progression to any nearby map. Heading to Lornar's Pass is unintuitive, and Fields of Ruin requires movement through a higher level zone, unless going through the human capital.

    -----------------------

That's it for today! Next week, we'll be headed to Kessex Hills.

What do you think of today's map? Any fond memories, or strong complaints? How well do you think this map stands up in comparison to all the others?

    GW2 Map Completion

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 07:56 AM PDT

Grateful for a little newbie help. Sorry if I am in the wrong place, just let me know where I should post queries like this one.
I have completed the Malchor's Leap map, except for one point of interest and one vista, still not found.
They don't light up on the map, so I am assuming they are under water (this happened to me before).
I have searched the map diligently, but I can't see any indication of unexplored ground, so I am baffled ... can anyone suggest how I could find the darn things? Maybe this has happened to other people?
    Any assistance appreciated.
    Thanks

Tips for faster Forging Steel runs (mostly for full squads)

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 01:39 PM PDT

    Hello,

I've been running Forging Steel somewhat regularly with friends since it came out and I though I'd share some tips for faster runs since I have met quite a few people who were resenting doing it because they had rather long and bad experience, some had 1 hour as the base/average duration of the event! We like dungeons a lot so that's why most of the tips and tricks can be familiar to people who run them often because we approached trying to break and speed it up like a very long dungeon path.

This is mostly applicable for your daily, 0 CM run with a full squad: with fewer people some scaling can make some tips not applicable or the setups different.

    General tips until the boss

Always move ahead of the Tank, if NPCs or the Tank do not get in combat they will not stop and thus keep rolling: this is does not seem much the keeping the Tank in movement as much as possible adds up quite a bit in the end

You can speed and superspeed the Tank: having a steady source of swiftess or superspeed (with Holo or Scrapper) in conjunction with the previous point will help greatly in the several great rolling section. And because you should be pushing ahead you should not end up around the Tank risking to "steal" the superspeed from it.

Bring a random Power DPS build (with some cleave if possible): there is no need for any healer or general support here expect the very offensive ones depending on the moment (banner, quickbrand).

    Event-specific tips

For this section we have found 3 places where some times can be gained for not really much or any effort and that mostly follow the general tips (with a twist sometimes). Video example of those tips cuz it's easier to show than explain

    1st defence event

Send most people to the invulnerable spawn portal at the right of the path downhill to spawn kill the trash mobs. This will allow the NPCs to be out of combat when the even ends and thus to move right away instead of needing to clear all the mobs if you defend on the Tank and thus lose a few 10s of seconds.

    Tar event to 1st Door

When you reach the spot where the Tar elemental event is (way ahead of the Tank) clear out all the mobs until you get the "Clear the route" event reward: if you don't get the reward you can't really go ahead. Once you got the reward rush you can ignore the tank (even if you were speeding it) and rush ahead clearing the mobs until the door and if the tank if sufficiently far away it will simply teleport on you, at the door asking you to open it and no portal will open there. Small drawback: you skip the tonic gathering event here and thus don't get a refresh on your buff but at this point you've rush quite a bit and you should still be mostly fine.

No Tank burst Forgeman (aka pewpew the Forgeman)

Keep a few people to deal with portals and runes. For the rest get 1 Quickness Firebrand (to apply Quickness to allies and Vulnarability) and a bunch of Rifle Deadeyes. The Forgeman has a buff reducing the incoming damage but that does not mean it nullifies it. With enough Deadeyes you can completely skip the Tank burst (in the video we sorta did it but we forgot which way we were gonna dodge the grenade dropped on us and we lost a bit of time :p) or at worst only need to 1 Tank burst.

Also please don't look my DE rotation I tried something a bit different and messed up somewhere along the way --'

    EDIT
Note that playing any profession having decent ranged damage is interesting here, we just found DE to be very very good in this situation.

You also don't need to go all in with 7+ friends, just having a few ranged builds can help greatly ensure you will at worst need only 1 bust.
    EDIT END

    Conclusion

From start of the tank escort (so excluding the pre) to boss death on the run the video comes from it took us a bit under 16 minutes and that was by no means a fully optimized run because we didn't have a reliable superspeed source since we wanted to show the no burst Forgeman and I didn't want to relog in the middle (since I'm the one usually speeding up the Tank). We also had Vishen bug for the 2nd Sniper location inside at the start of the Dwarf section because htey didn't spawned on top but appeared near the tank, sniping away, with the event icon but unable to give anybody a sniper. With fewer people the scaling can get very interesting for the Forgeman requiring a less overkill setup for the boss.

If people have other reliable skips or times saves for the instance I'm always looking for more (I also have a few time saves that I can't reproduce reliably reproduce yet so can't really add them here).

    Download issue?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:34 AM PDT

So me and my friend played WoW for a little bit but didn't want to pay for the subscription so we came across gw2 and found it very interesting but when he tries to download the game, his launcher says he's only getting 50kb a sec. He has normal wifi and has downloaded other games on his laptop, not sure why it's doing it and looking for a solution? If anyone can help?

How to help a new player with tunnel vision?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:17 AM PDT

Yesterday, me and a friend did "Victory or Death" for the first time together, because he was struggling at the first part with the airships, and hey, an extra helping hand isn't a bad idea.

I was a core warrior running GS/mace+shield, and he was a berserker with axe+axe. I noticed him standing in AoEs a lot, and generally getting tunnelvisioned. During the first few airship phases, I had him deal with adds while I manned the cannons to shoot down dragons. I still helped out with mobs between cannon phases, as his health regularly dipped to 25%. There were a few times where he'd hop on cannon because there were no adds, but once they spawned, I'd have to remind him to hop off cannon and deal with them, once he got to half health.

Any suggestions as to how I could help this poor guy out? His damage was great, and when I took the heat instead, we had no issues, but the Bloated Creeper gave him a lot of trouble.

We had a brief chat, and he mentioned he "can't" stay out of the AoEs. I re

Why open loot bags at lv56?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 03:45 AM PDT

Hey, yesterday I was running the silverwastes chest farm and comm alongside other people in chat were recommending that we open the loot with a lv56 character. Can anybody fully explain why? And are there any other benefits to having a lv56 character sitting around? Thanks

Bonus question: what does CC mean? I looked it up and it says crowd control but i still don't understand what that means when I'm asked to CC lol

    Pyro Sylvari engineer?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 02:50 AM PDT

New player here trying to create their first character. Would a pyromaniac Sylvari engineer make any sense lore-wise? I don't really like the Charr or Norn, they feel a bit brutish to me, and I just don't like the Asura's appearance. I was looking at human, but that's so mainstream...

I like the idea of something different and I love fire, so I was thinking maybe a Sylvari engineer that is fascinated by mechanisms and their workings and their innate curiosity drives them towards it. I'm not all that a fan of plants and nature (so you may wonder why I want to play Sylvari, but I really just like the idea of unorthodox characters that go against the grain of how their race is supposed to act) but fire is innately a natural resource as well.

Can you think of any way this would work? Lore-wise?

which of these would you think would be best for a new player, gameplay and difficulty wise?

    Mount skins

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 06:26 AM PDT

So I'm only level 20. Got the mount (raptor) through using my boost on a necro which I'll play later :)

Now leveling my revenant. I see the "Primal Spirit Jackal Skin" and love the looks.

Can I get that skin and be able to use the jackal mount instantly since I have a Raptor or would only raptor skins work for my mount?

Thanks, much appreciated, sorry for being new to this but it's rather complex for someone just joining the game.

[Tip] For those of us using a Ryzen APU and subsampling rendering to play Guild Wars 2: Enable the Image Sharpening for improved visuals

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 10:49 AM PDT

In the last few months AMD has added a new rendering option in the AMD driver graphics control panel for games that use render scaling called Image Sharpening. (This is a feature for all Polaris, Vega and RDNA GPUs and integrated GPUs.)

For example, I run the game a native 1920x1080 resolution to maintain a crisp user interface and fonts but this requires me to enable the GW2 in-game subsampling rendering (a quarter of the native resolution) to maintain playable frame rates for my Ryzen laptop. The result is pretty blurry because it's having to scale up the lowered 3D rendered image up to 1080p.

But in the AMD control panel, I enable 100% Image Sharpening for GW2 application to significantly improve the visual quality of the game with little extra performance cost.

The AMD page on the technique has more details. Note: this is only for games that use subsampling rendering. Games that render at native resolution or use supersampling rendering will not see any benefits.
