HoT maps are by far the best level-designed maps of GW2

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 06:51 AM PDT

Even in others MMOs, never encountered so much complexity with those vertical designs. I absolutly love it and it hurts to come back on linear path of fire maps. :(

Friend and I tried out pvp in this game. Is it normal that its so hostile and elitist?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 02:07 PM PDT

Hello all. My friend and I usually never play pvp. We have 2 legendaries each but we never really set a foot into pvp because we enjoyed pve more and only casually too. Sometimes a bit of wvw for dailies but thats the most we do. Today we decided to try out some sPvP in unranked (of course, don't want to bother actually serious players) and the first game we got in we just said hello and a guy in the lobby already said "vanilla ele lmao, afk", which he did. Second game we got into a game with 2 people in the enemy team with the legendary champion title, which I already know means they played way more pvp than any on our team and they stomped us with us not even getting 50 points. Not necessarily bad though, just one sided.

Then in the third game though we had a guy in the enemy team that was a mirage that also had the legendary champion title that each time he killed some of our team he would say in map chat and sometimes whisper us "kill urself worthless [n-word]". Like Jesus, we are just trying to learn and I even switched classes to something more considered meta and we just get people who I guess love to noobstomp us. Then fourth game we again get an afk because I was deadeye on thief.

I am really shocked, and I don't know if that is normal but neither my friend or I I think are gonna set foot into pvp again in the next time. It seems like a totally different game to me community wise. In pve it's all so relaxed and fun and then you get...this. Did I just meet a few outstanding people in my matches or is that considered common? Feels like it is more of an isolated sub community than anything else.

So with the huuuuuuge global nerf I believe that things have settled enough for better judgement calls to be made. Anyone have any idea which class is dead, meta or just "meh" in the current pvp scenario? I know condi stuff is pretty strong but that's about it

The Weekly Map Recap - Week 6, Brisban Wildlands

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Welcome to the Weekly Map Recap, a series where we will look back at one map in the game each week. We'll look with a critical eye at how each map represents its theme, proves faithful to its lore, and implements its design. We'll see how effective its gameplay is, whether the art holds up, and the forecast for the map's long term retention. With 51 maps to date, it'll be quite the journey!

Links to the previous entries in a reply at the bottom!

    6 of 51 - Brisban Wildlands - Level 15-25

The second map for Asura and Sylvari players, Brisban Wildlands is just bizarre. A mish-mash of different stories and artistic influences, it is the porridge of Guild Wars 2 maps. I don't particularly like it. While it has become one of the most important maps in the Vanilla game as the door to Dry Top and The Silverwastes, I'm not sure that it lives up to that significance.

    Theme/Concept - 3/10

Brisban Wildlands theme is confused and messy. It's theme is almost 'the jungle' by default. Other more jungle-y maps in the vanilla game, such as Mount Maelstrom or Caledon Forest, have much more clear identities. Brisban Wildlands is the closest thing we get to a 'Maguuma Jungle' Map in the vanilla game - and that has a very specific connotation. The Maguuma Jungle in this franchise has historically been associated (like the Crystal Desert, actually) with the search for enlightenment. In that sense, it was always the thematic link between the mystical and nature.

Some of that is here. The Henge of Denravi is here. There are a small number of ghosts that reference the events of the original game. But overall, this map's theme seems to be 'outlaws'. Bandits, inquest, nightmare court, all thrive out here.

    Lore - 5/10

The Maguuma means druids. It's hard to overemphasize the extent to which the lore of the Maguuma in GW1 was tied to the druids. It's actually astonishing how little of the plot of Heart of Thorns had to do with the druids, given their significance in the first game.

Here in Brisban Wildlands, we get a little bit of that. Again, the Henge of Denravi is represented, albeit in kind of a limited way. The original idea for the Henge was that it was a place that none could find save those that had already been there - sort of a mystical hiding place of the druids. That was why it was cool. Not so here. It's just sort of a place you can go.

That's kind of the approach the map takes to lore in general. There's a skritt city, but it's not really significant in the lore. There's no representative of Skrittsburgh who is involved in the story at any point. Even in Heart of Thorns, which is surprisingly skritt heavy, there's no mention.

There is some sylvari lore (the Revered Terebinth), and some human lore (hints at White Mantle). But much of it is inconsequential and comes across as ultimately a bit of a waste of time.

Perhaps the most interesting side note is that Fort Koga - present here in GW2 - was originally a PvP map in GW1 that could be accessed from the PvE world (highly unusual). That was later done away with and the area was made inaccessible. But here it is, 250 years later.

    Design - 4/10

The Maguuma maps in GW1 were fascinating for the extent which they played with verticality, especially for a game that at the time had no mechanics which built upon that. Maguuma maps had dry, red dirt uplands and deep green valleys cut through the rock. Any 'jungle' was in these crevasses in what was essentially a desert. Maguuma maps therefore had a maze like quality to them - finding your way between cuts in the rock and going up and down and back again.

Brisban Wildlands mirrors one thing - the frustration of travel. It is surprisingly difficult to get from one side of the map to the next - and not in a way that is impressive, like Tangled Depths. Areas of the map are often closed down by unclear timers. Skrittsburgh is not alone in this. Dry Top is also often closed down in this way. So are some of the other areas. It's not particularly fun.

The rest of the map is one large 'donut' around Skrittsburgh. It's mostly filled with human bandit forts with little of interest.

    Gameplay - 4/10

The events here are generally run of the mill. The only ones worthy of note involve escorting the druid spirit to its husk or attacking the white mantle ghosts; these are mainly interesting for lore reasons. The gameplay itself is not engaging or out of the ordinary.

If you can't access Skrittsburgh, you're missing the meta on the map - which is hardly a meta. It's sort of an area control series of events, just without stakes or anything interesting as a reward. A skritt weapon set would have gone a long way here.

The best that can be said for gameplay is that there is a fun guild mission here - which would be neat if anyone ran guild missions. Although I dislike that the timers are odd for the Dry Top passage event, the actual event itself requires coordination and is far more interesting than the vanilla events on the map.

I would also be remiss if I did not mention that there is a great beetle race on this map. But one beetle race hardly makes a map.

Finally, this map has the unfortunate distinction of having no jumping puzzles whatsoever.

    Art - 2/10

This is maybe the worst part. Although there are some interesting areas for vanilla GW2 - some waterfalls are pretty, and the druid areas are mildly interesting looking - by and large it's an especially dull looking map. This is especially bad considering the fascinating art that made up the Maguuma area in the first game. Imagine a GW2 map featuring the clash of dry uplands and saturated green lowlands. The wicker houses perched on stilts. Instead, we have a map that looks like a drier, less interesting Metrica Province.

    Long Term/Retention - 6/10

The map is a choice farming spot for iron ore - always in demand. It has little else of interest other than required vanilla story steps.

It's main source of retention is players moving through it to access Dry Top and The Silverwastes. If your map's main source of players happens to be folks passing through to get somewhere else - that's not ideal.

    Overall - 4/10

I find Brisban Wildlands to be a pretty dismal map. Pockets of it feel too open to be a jungle, and the more dense parts feel like an absolute slog. The Skritt caverns, while a cool idea, tend to block movement through the map - the balance seems off. Opening the way to Dry Top tends to be bothersome. The art is uninspired, the lore underutilized, and the gameplay uninteresting.

    -----------------------

That's it for today! Next week, we'll be headed to Diessa Plateau.

What do you think of today's map? Any fond memories, or strong complaints? How well do you think this map stands up in comparison to all the others?

    What is your favourite spot/area?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 06:45 AM PDT

Since this lockdown went viral (pun intended), I decided to rekindle my relationship with GW. My first thing to do was to take a walk in Lornar's Pass. I love that map. Especially the area around Durmand Priory, and the relaxing music it has, the atmosphere is so tranquil and magical. I wonder if you could share your favourite spots/areas to wander around. Feels good to escape reality these days.

People in this game can't think or read

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 05:54 AM PDT

Is someone able to provide a logical explanation why longbow rangers insist on cycling through all their skills on cooldown except barrage?

I constantly see on events like tequatl and the like, basically anywhere a ton of people are, rangers just using hunter's shot and PBS randomly while attacking

they use PBS on breakbar less mobs just because the skill isn't on cooldown just to piss everyone off by knocking stuff out of AOE and melee range but barrage? nope, not using that

i just finished TD meta and saw a 250 mastery points ranger whose rotation was exactly this: autoattack -> rapid fire -> hunter's shot -> PBS -> signet of stone while strafing all over the area but still not being at max range to make use of any of the range bonuses

no wonder rangers have such a trash reputation if this is the baseline intellect of one

Anyone have BOTH Slumbering Conflux and Conflux?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 05:47 AM PDT

Before I go for both, I just want confirmation that you can wear both at the same time.

I know you should be able to as they are different items, but I'd like confirmation from someone who has both of them and is wearing both at once. Thanks!

There should be a way to mute specific weapons or auto attacks

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 01:05 PM PDT

I generally enjoy hearing combat sounds and weapon noises but Guardian scepter is maddening. It's a single animation looping auto attack with a loud annoying noise so in order to lower/mute it I have to mute all other weapon sounds..

What do you do with pieces of unidentified gear?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 03:57 AM PDT

Do you sell them or salvage them? Do you bother opening them? Is there any chance of getting a yellow in a green bag, or an exotic in a yellow bag?

My current strategy has just been to sell them all, blues/greens/yellows, but I've seen that most people prefer to salvage the blues/greens and sell yellows. Is there evidence that this is a better return? Prices for mithril/silk/elder seem very low.

    Pact Commander Sylvari during HoT

Is there a way to extract/mod textures client-side?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 05:13 AM PDT

Guild Wars 2 is a beautiful game, but I'd like to see if I can add my own personal touch here and there, so I was wondering...does anyone know any methods on how to extract and mod textures?

Complexity of the method doesn't matter, nor any tools/software required, having at least a guide would help me get on my way to figure it out.
