    Why do you raid? analysis of a survey result

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:06 AM PST

    **TL;DR:** Players who raid on GW2 do it for the people they play with, for the challenge but mostly cause they find raiding fun.

    ----Original post of the "survey": https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/eyruew/why_do_you_raid_pve/

    Foreword

    When asked "why do you raid?" to GW2 player, 44 (former or active) raiders answered. The number of responses was more than expected, the fact that 44 peoples answered gave me the idea to analyze the results.

    This post will be an analysis of the survey participants answers.

    Participants could answer the question in any way they chose, using the proposed motivation categories guideline to express the mains reasons why they raid. Results are presented using these categories.

    - Challenge: they find raiding challenging/hard and/or it's a good way to like self-improvement in the game;

    - Party: they like raiding for the squad/guild they raid with;

    - Helping other players: they like teaching/helping people to raid (training squad, ...);

    - Golds and/or Loots: they like it for the pretty good amount of gold, for the drop (ascended weapon, armor, ...), ...

    - Legendaries: they want(ed) to craft legendary armor (PvE) and/or the legendary ring.

    - Storyline: they like raid for its unique storyline.

    - To be toxic: ... self-explanatory.

    Results

    📷

    Motivation Number of players for which it's one of the main motivations to raid (44 raiders in total)
    Challenge 26 (59,09%)
    Party 20 (45,45%)
    Helping other players 6 (13,64%)
    Golds and/or loots 11 (25,00%)
    Legendaries 8 (18,18%)
    Storyline 1 (2,27%)
    To be toxic 1 (2,27%)

    Outside of these categories, the survey also shows that 43 out of 44 raiders (97,73%) find raids fun.

    Unfortunately, 5 out of 44 raiders (11,36%) are former-raiders which stop raiding for various reasons (that are not the subject of this analysis ... maybe another time).

    Results analysis

    The vast majority of answering raiders find raiding fun.

    Results show that, for those raiders, the two first "main" motivations to raid are :

    - the challenge raid give them ;

    - the good time they have when they raid with their squadmates ;

    The three "minor" motivations to raid are:

    - the golds&loots they get ;

    - the possibility to craft legendary armors and ring ;

    - helping other players, by the mean of training groups for new players or helping more experienced squads to clear bosses.

    Special mention to the only one survey participants that mention the fact that raids have storylines too. These uniques storylines are mostly forgotten but they are pretty good nonetheless.

    Conclusion

    This survey was a great way to discuss with other raiders from all "levels" from beginners to veterans.

    The fact that raiders are mostly motivated by the way GW2 raids were designed (challenge and group content) was expected. Rewards are often considered "secondaries".

    These results also show that a little more than 10% of raiders that answered the survey enjoy sharing their "love" of raids by helping newcomer or less experienced player. This help takes the form of leading/joining training squad, leading/joining raid guild,...

    This conclusion a good way for players who never tried raids to know what to expect from raids, to know that training squads/guilds exist (even if there is less and less of them). They are, most of the time, a good way to learn and improve in a nice environment.

    And don't forget, it's a group content more appreciated in a squad, with friends if possible: good laugh insured.

    I simply cannot get into other mmo's except gw2 because of the mount system... Whenever I try a new mmo I always think of gw2 mount system and return...

    It just set the bar too high regarding mounts in mmo's

    Title. Me and some boys tried a bounty three times in a row today, and they all spawned ambushes. FUCK that noise. Ambushes were supposed to be a joko meme, but now he's gone. Bounties are already kinda waste of time by themselves.

    The main challenge of Strike Missions is finding a way to motivate inexperienced players to run better builds and practice stronger, more efficient rotations. Without this it's all for naught, and Strikes will fall into the same abyss as T3 Fractals.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 09:08 AM PST

    I think that Strike Missions are well-balanced mechanically. Grothmar starts out at a mostly flat difficulty with simple mechanics that encourage players to stack, stick together and occasionally dodge. The middle-tier bosses (Fraenir + Voice/Claw) teach coordination and cooperation whereas The Boneskinner and the Whisper of Jormag exist as more difficult boss encounters for motivated players.

    Unfortunately, similar to the difficulty hurdle between T2 & T3 Fractals, any hopes of cultivating players for raids are limited by poorly communicated standards for build-craft and damage. Often times if and when you run these with newbies you see overly defensive trait-icons in their boon/buff bars like "Death's Carapace," which limit their damage output and does not significantly increase their odds of survival.

    It's high past time that ArenaNet created a primer for endgame content that fully explains the standard compliment of offensive boons, defensive boons, conditions and class-specific buffs like banners. It's crazy that they haven't clarified to players how much free damage, defence or utility there is in GW2 and how in an endgame squad or party composition the use of these boons & buffs is a standard practice.

    Survivability is something that ArenaNet really needs to address too. When you have a high up-time of boons like Protection (-33% damage), regeneration (300-400 HP/s) and are in the presence of spirits like Water Spirit (Life on Hit) or Stone Spirit (Protection on Hit); there's really no need for extra defensive layers.

    I think if ArenaNet wants to build up a player-base for endgame content then they need to leverage their build template (loadouts) to make recommended, suggested builds for players or offer them a temporary set similar to what players get in sPVP (amulet, traits, runes, sigils) etc.I think newbies tend to vastly overestimate the amount of defence that they need for harder content. It tanks their damage.

    In other games, and in open world content, having extra layers of defense is encouraged if not mandatory. In GW2 boons are exceptionally powerful, both offensively and defensively, and alongside proper dodging which is bolstered by a boon called vigor which grants increased endurance regeneration.

    I think Strikes, not entirely dissimilar to T3 Fractals, are going to miss their mark unless ArenaNet solves their communication and lack of transparency regarding standards for damage. I don't think they need to get into extreme detail about it such as a raid parse, but I think they should setup some sort of basic metric or role system that informs players whether their performance was sub-par, average or above-par per strike.

    T3 Fractals are considered "ELO Hell," for lack of a better term. They're less casual than T2, but less intense than T4; basically, bosses have more HP, there's more need for damage mitigation or support and the players generally deal sub-par damage with weak, inefficient builds that do not scale with boons. They're generally at the mercy of whatever healer is willing to hard-carry. The lack of timed boss encounters, unlike raids or strikes, means that you never have to worry about your damage.

    I'll be purchasing the expansions soon, and I have some questions!

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 05:38 AM PST

    Hello! I started playing in early 2018 only to be burned out because of how repetitive everything felt. I left my then level 60 Elementalist (who is 73 now) in Bloodtide Coast for months on end. I recently came back last December and since PoF comes with HoT now, I thought of buying the expansion packs. I've reviewed the packs (Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate) that you can purchase and thought of purchasing Ultimate just to get the most out of it. Now, I have a few questions!

    1.) Mounts! Once a character reaches 80 and gets the Raptor, will the other characters in that account be able to use the mount as well regardless of their level?

    2.) I still have unfinished personal story missions, will the stories from HoT and PoF become prioritized? Or will I still be able to juggle between the three mission paths?

    3.) I'm not into PvP at all, will that affect my gameplay and the achievements I can get?

    4.) Since I'm technically purchasing two EPs, will I get two additional character slots?

    5.) What items from the Gem Store should I get immediately?

    That's pretty much all the questions so far, not really sure if I have any more lol. But that's it. Thank you if you've read this far!
