(pre-nerf) Siax CM 0:09 by Dispossession [dP]

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:20 AM PST

Hey everyone! Here is our previously unpublished Siax speedkill from August 2021.

    Pupsi (Dragonhunter)

    Ryan (Dragonhunter)

    Vysil (Dragonhunter)

    Prud (Dragonhunter)

    Cody (Soulbeast)

    Log: https://dps.report/qC2K-20210815-233216_siax

This was an ambitious project: to defeat a fractal or raid boss faster than ever before. It required perfect play from all 5 players and just over 80k gold (at the time) of agony resistance. We were forced to cut it short after our first few candidate kills because "status reset" was introduced into the game, which obviated several of the mechanics we used to achieve our kill time and demoralized many end-game speedrunners. Because we felt that it was an incomplete project and were not satisfied with the results at the time, we deliberated over publishing what we had achieved until now. With EoD on the horizon, new classes and balance changes on the way, we felt that it was the right time to close this (unfinished) chapter.

    Skipping Split Phases

Phasing Siax to 66% or 33% health, respectively, triggers a split phase in which Siax becomes invulnerable, summons four spirits, and channels a one-shot attack. Under normal conditions, these enemies must be killed in order to render Siax vulnerable to damage once more.

It was discovered in late 2020 by [snek] that this trigger can be bypassed with an extreme DPS rate that reduces Siax's HP to below 66% before his first breakbar. In this case, Siax does not become invulnerable; his Echoes will not spawn to protect him. Other players eventually demonstrated the concept also applies for the second split phase if you get to 33% instead.

The DPS requirement for skipping the second split phase is not trivial. Based on frame analysis, there is a window of approximately 4.05s after entering combat to deal ~4.1m damage. This left virtually no tolerance for error by all five players, in order to meet a group rate of greater than 1m (1 million) damage per second.

    Mistlock Precast

The Guardian trait Power of the Virtuous provides a 1% damage modifier for each unique boon and therefore we considered fringe boons like resistance, in addition to the standard ones like might, quickness, and alacrity. "Save Yourselves!" is a conventional choice for achieving minimal uptime but we also used a Superior Rune of Resistance to generate additional uptime with "Feel My Wrath!".

Virtues Dragonhunters which drop the Radiance traitline are sacrificing a lot of critical chance for additional modifiers, which is offset by the trait Spotter on our Skirmishing Soulbeast. Starting the boss with Spotter active was problematic because the trait refreshes at 3s intervals. To ensure consistency, the Soulbeast manually tested this internal cooldown before each mistlock precast, then entered "in combat" at the correct moment using a tonic.

    Boss Precast

Dragonhunter is a natural class to stack here because of its high-damage boss precasts including Perfect Inscriptions, symbols, and traps. Bane Signet provides 216 power to the user as a passive buff, however casting the skill with PI quintuples that value to 1080. The tradeoff for sharing this buff is that after ten seconds, you lose the effect. Everyone began the encounter with eight stacks of Bane Signet, totaling 1728 bonus power per player (8640 bonus power across five players). This buff maintains full value until the 4.4s mark, at which point half of our stacks expire, then the remaining half expire at 5.73s, after we have already shredded through two-thirds of the boss HP.

Symbol precasts are fairly conventional, except we omitted the lowest damage skills in order to preserve Bane Signet uptime. Prior to the "status reset" patch, certain symbols' durations could be extended by Writ of Persistence (Mace, Greatsword, Staff, and Longbow). The durations of other symbols (namely Sword and Scepter) would retroactively decrease upon unticking the trait. The reason why we used Symbol of Resolution before another symbol with comparatively lower damage is to recover its cooldown earlier during the boss encounter. Zealous Blade allowed us to get this skill back even faster.

Our trap placement was much more simple in contrast with other Siax speedkills as there are no spirits to deal with on the split phase. We used everything but Light's Judgment, which gets deleted when you un-equip it and also does less damage than every other option. While it was possible to "UI bug" Light's Judgment, which is required for precasting Ranger traps, we omitted it for the sake of convenience.

The Soulbeast precasted Frost Trap for damage and Spike Trap to immediately activate the buff from Twice as Vicious. Upon starting the fight, there are around 0.4s before entering combat, which acts as a short window to share One Wolf Pack before swapping to Oppressive Superiority. Sharing OWP at the correct time maximized group damage; for this reason, the Soulbeast started the fight in order to consistently share it at the most optimal time.

    Boss Encounter

Our main improvement over [iV]'s previous 13s speedkill is shifting damage into the Exposed window. Using shield for CC on a power Guardian build always comes at too high an opportunity cost. In order to break the defiance bar, we used Dragon's Maw instead. Dragon's Maw has an initial pull when it activates, and then creates a ward which knocks down enemies crossing its boundary. By placing the trap so that the edge overlaps the center of the boss's hitbox, the pull and knockdown both activate on the boss. We also took advantage of the interaction that placing a second Dragon's Maw inside of an active one yields one extra pull for a total of 450 defiance damage per Dragonhunter.

We changed starting weapons as well. By starting on sword, we gained extra greatsword skills to use after our initial burst; importantly, an extra Symbol of Resolution because we precasted it earlier. The Soulbeast started with greatsword instead of axe, allowing him to use Whirling Defense into Exposed. Improvements to damage compression after breaking the bar greatly accelerate the last 33% of the fight.

    Other Notes

    • We experimented with delaying our Dragonhunters' Binding Blade for when the Volatile Hallucinations walk into 600 range, but this timing was inconsistent between kills. In the end we didn't have enough time to test it.

    • We had plans to try double Soulbeast as we could potentially get One Wolf Pack to last throughout the entirety of the fight for all 5 players, but again we didn't have enough time to test it. This appears to be the superior composition if you are able to meet the initial DPS check to 33%.

    • We were never able to get the bar to break as fast as we would have liked, or for that matter as good of a kill as we would have liked. We believe sub 9 was possible with this comp, but, again, we didn't have enough time to get it.

    • As mentioned previously this record required an extreme amount of Agony Resistance. At the time of this kill, we needed at least 20k gold per Dragonhunter, totaling just over 80k gold in total.

Is it me or are there too many orange/yellow AOEs in this game?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:36 AM PST

    Title is pretty self-explanatory.

Some player AOE skills have an orange/yellow target, there's the skyscale attack that also gives an orange AOE etc. My frustrations come from the fact that most bosses in endgame content (HoT and later) always have yellow/orange telegraphs for their AOE attacks... I just did the Drakkar fight and I often couldn't tell the difference between Drakkar's AOEs and just generic player skills. The color choices are visually not very friendly...

Idk if it's just me. I do have a very basic consumer class computer that can only run the game smoothly on the lowest graphic settings possible, so maybe it's not that annoying if you run the game with high graphics.

    Anyone else get my frustration?

My character has come full circle and I love it

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 11:59 PM PST

During lockdown some friends and I decided to keep ourselves busy by playing Dungeons and Dragons online. We played curse of strahd and I made a light cleric called Ellie. I had such a good time with the character that I decided to make and name a guild wars 2 character after her. I made a guardian because I didn't have one of those at level 80 and started my journey. I got the hero points and went firebrand because I liked the look of it and left her there while I continued on my main. I did my first raid on my BS warrior the other week and saw how a firebrand and scourge could really impact the fight. So I went back to little Ellie and got her geared up in exotics (I'm too poor to do ascended just yet). I learned the rotation, not super well but well enough to get by and set out to kill my most hated enemy, the spider queen in AC. I've died to that thing many a time on many a character and never been able to solo it, until yesterday. It got me a couple of times but I won in the end. So I figured I was having fun on firebrand and how would it translate to Dungeons and Dragons? At first I was set on paladin because guardians do line up quite nicely with them but when I stopped and thought about all that fire, defence and healing output I wound up deciding that light cleric would be the best fit without multiclassing. Then I looked at my character name and realised I'd come full circle.

Am I using Builds and Templates wrong? (PvP vs WvW/PvE)

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:33 AM PST

Although the PvE/WvW and PvP equipment tabs exist...I still end up needing to use separate Equipment and Build templates for PvP.

Most of my "PvP builds" use different traits and weapons than my PvE/WvW builds. PvP versions of skills/traits often mean a need to go with different stuff. So, traits need a separate PvP Build--sure. That's easy.

But for gear too? To easily swap into the right weapons, either I need to manually equip my PvP weapons while on the PvE/WvW Equipment Build or create a seperate PvP Equipment Build (what I've been doing...but seems like overkill since only the weps change).

The additional slightly annoying part (for me) is I'm one of those GW2 first-world legendary gear types. When I swap out weapons manually, there's a bit of clicking to re-apply sigils each time.

Is that just a quirk of the current template system? Or am I missing something?

    Thanks!

With all the fist-like Foci out there it's a shame we don't have a "Pugilist" elite spec yet

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 08:46 AM PST

It's honestly pretty weird that Daredevil and Revenant's staff abilities came before that, since we had practically no staffs that looked like actual battle staffs or polearms. Of course, that has changed over the years somewhat, but I still feel like there are way more Foci that would totally work as fist weapons or knuckle dusters.

The White Tiger focus in particular would be absolutely dope for a fist fighter spec.

We kind of have that with Daredevil, but those are just a few utility skills with barely adequate animations.

"Return to" achievements for Seasons of Dragons felt really rewarding. EoD here I come!

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 01:02 PM PST

I recently got back into GW2 after a couple years of not playing. I last played at PoF release and played through the main story once on a Firebrand. After picking the game back up, the "Return to" achievements really gave me a sense of direction and I played through LW2, LW3, PoF, LW4, and Icebrood Saga on a Scrapper which had been collecting dust in preparation of playing a Mechanistic once EoD releases. I unlocked my Legendary from the achievements last night after playing for the last few weeks/months and was able to unlock Runic armor (some of the best non cash shop armor I've seen in game). I also unlocked skyscale earlier with the help of "return to" providing a lot of the needed map currencies at one point, and the rollerbeetle before.

I feel pretty prepped, and just want to grab a few more hero points.
