Guild Wars When did the icon for gw.exe change? After having it on my desktop for 15 years, I noticed something looked different today. The old icon is still embedded in the EXE file. I couldn't find any mention of it in recent update notes. Just curious.

GW Prophecies - All secrets / cool things ( spoilers )

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:16 AM PST

Its hard for me to imagine how new players feel when playing through the game for the first time, they have access to a lot of information that we didn't, and might feel a need to rush through prophecies, older players tend to rush through it too because we have done it so many times, I want to add a bit of a perspective of what the game was like back near release, this might be interesting to new players ( or old ) and maybe even give people some ideas for things to do, or fuel GW1 vs GW2 debates.

Firstly, most players didn't really use skill websites or the like, PvX wiki did not exist, builds spread through word of mouth mostly, through parties or guilds, there was no Skill Templates so sharing your build was more difficult than now.... There was more of a sense of exploration due to this, a sense that you could perhaps find something that most people had not, just around the corner... here is the list of 'secret' things.

    - Totem Axe, a special green weapon that could only be found on certain monsters, deep in the maguuma jungle ( where most players might not dare to venture, or not want to stay for long ), off the beaten track as it were. Being green, it had 'perfect' stats, Energy +5, and Enchantments +20% (great!)

    - Droks forge run. Hang around in the game long enough and you might discover that not every player went through the entire story in the proper order, some players would pay 'runners' - expert warriors who had learned to endure the terrible gauntlet between Beacon's Perch and Droknar's Forge ( where rich players could get the best armor rating in the game from the skilled dwarven smiths ). Many runners would do this 'Duo' - with 2 players, to improve reliability and not annoy their paying customers with failure, but experts would chance doing it solo, for double the money. If you didn't fancy skipping important content or paying the high asking price, another popular run was the Ascalon to Sanctum cay run, the 'marathon'.

    - Kepkhet Marrowfeast ... A boss in the crystal desert, she is special in that she is a scarab monk that has a powerful elite skill ( mark of protection ), surrounded by many many ranger type scarabs that form a circle around her. If you can defeat her then you have a chance to gain the green monk weapon Kepkhet's Refuge.

Rotscale ... A huge undead dragon that rests atop a crypt of sorts on an island among the marshes, she is in a hidden zone of the map west of Temple of the Ages that most players would never come across as its not needed to go through there for the story or any side quests. The dragon is guarded by skeleton archers and is extremely formidible even for many players nowadays. It drops a bow called the Rotwing Recurve Bow.

Sorrow's Furnace ... added in a patch a little after the games actual release, this Elite Dungeon in the Southern Shiverpeaks ( near Deldrimor Warcamp ) packs some of the hardest groups in the original campaign, it hosts several quests, each one necessary to gain access to a different part of this labyrinthian underground domain. Many of the bosses drop Green weapons, which were some of the most valuable items in Prophecies, selling for around 100 platinum. Of particular note is the Dragos Flatbow, which is probably the largest bow in the game. The 'meta' party back then for farming SF was a warrior, a bonder monk, a healer monk and a minion master and something else, a SS necro I think.

Not many people used to know this, maybe they do now but.. Sorrows Furnace used to be the only place in the game outside of the Hall of Heroes that you could get a Crystalline sword ( not the fake one from Pre-Searing ), a purple one. The drop rate was very low and it only comes from chests which spawn during a certain repeatable quest. ( killroy stonekin ? he is based on Leeroy Jenkins ). Crystalline swords were and probably still are, one of the most valuable items in Guild Wars.

Underworld And Fissure of Woe ... Elite Areas which costs 1000 gold to get in... a lot of money in those days, who knows what one will find inside, when one goes from the land of the living.. to another plane entirely. Required your continent to have the 'favor of the gods' to gain entry, which was earned through tournament level PvP at the Hall of Heroes.

Icy Dragon Sword ... instead of fire like prince ruriks famed sword, it emits ice, making it more pretty and desirable ( also much much more rare ), they were also guaranteed to be max level. They are dropped by the Ice Imps in a certain cave in a certain area of the Southern Shiverpeaks thats a very long way from civilization.

Elite Armor Crafters ... Exploring the far flung outposts like Marhans Grotto you might find these crafters, the clothes they can make are really cool and could make you stand out from everyone else, but so expensive.

Tomb of the Primeval kings ... Adjacent to Glints mission is this secret Elite Area. Its a little more forgiving than most Elite Areas in the game, but it still packs some frightful mobs which can easily overwhelm a party that isn't careful. It has a great variety of challenges to overcome, after which you will reach the Hall of Heroes ( yes the same place in the lore where they battle for the favor of the gods ), if you don't realize this lore aspect, it will probably lose a lot of its impact and significance. The final boss drops a green axe which was very popular with warriors.

    - Gold Weapons ... if you were VERY lucky, you might find a gold weapon such as a 'butterfly sword', even luckier if it was max damage ! inscriptions didn't exist then so if you found one that was 15^50 it was very valuable, especially if it was a rare or good looking type such as a Fiery Dragon Sword.

    - Skill quests ... . they gave you cool new abilities like Apply Poison that maybe your friends missed when they went through the campaign. There were a large number of quests in the game and most were interesting compared to stereotypical mmorpg quests.

    - Elite skills ... A reason to search the vast lands of tyria for fearsome, undefeated legendary monsters who could give your party a bad day. You could capture skills for your secondary profession too.. infinite possibilities to become a uniquely powerful player .

    - The Scepter of Orr ... a really cool staff which is to do with the lore and main story that could give you +4 energy regeneration or something, which was unusual at the time, you can pick it up in certain missions like you would a ritualist pot.

    - Treasure Chests ... really awesome things that I usually couldn't afford to buy the keys for. It really was worth opening them back then unlike now. People would create groups just to enter Fissure of Woe together to run through opening the chests ( not fighting ).

Attribute Quests - Secret Quests that could unlock the hidden extra attribute points needed to get your character up to full power. One of them is with the snake people in the desert, the other I forgot.

Muursaat Infusion armor - a way to not die horribly to the Muursaat which frequent the later parts of the game. No other campaign had any mechanic like this.

Rare skins / strong monsters - Giants in particular can be a pain, Hydra too for example when leaving Ascalon. Certain mesmer enemies could be really annoying ( wind rider ? ) and in UW there is the Aaatxe and Mindblade spectres... Weapons include chaos axes ( which you can dye different colors - nice ) and storm bows, shadow blades.

    - The 55hp item / farming build ... a certain quest in Ascalon gives an item which can be used to REDUCE your hp down to 55, which was instrumental to one of the first farming builds to gain widespread use. It made you 'invincible', a bit like kirito in sword art online. Alternative methods were Obsidian Flesh ( Elementalist ) or Healing Hands / Mark of Protection on a warrior monk - though this was far less effective.

    - The Villainry of Galrath ... this quest was EPIC at the time, acquired in Lions Arch I believe.

    - Black and white dyes

I might have missed a few things that stood out to players as interesting.

Is there any way to go behind the Wall in Searing in 2020

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:10 PM PST

So, I played a bunch of GW2 with my friends, but wanted to go back to my first big MMlOve to relieve some memories. Loaded the Game, figured out my login stuff and looked at my characters. Happy that they all still exist, i started a new one (whyever i had a file), giving it the name and the Class of my GW2 Character, watched the pre-searing cutscene and... was alone in Ascalon.

Long Story Short. Do i have to gift the game to a friend just to have someone to open the gate for me later or is there... a workaround?

    First time through build help

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 06:37 AM PST

Hi there, it's my first playthrough of guild wars and I started off with nightfall as a warrior, can't find any builds that I can use while I playthrough as they all seem to be builds for later in the game. Is there any warrior builds I can use for Nightfall?
